Mark’s brilliant slide show revealed how 46 participants (most on 350cc Royal Enfield motorcycles) from 13 different countries rode from Udaipur in North West India, through five states, across 16.000 kilometres, down to Goa in the South West.

Rotarians from thirteen countries, including Australia, France, Indonesia, Germany, Norway, Belgium, UK, USA., all speaking different languages participated, but they were able to communicate freely in English.

The host Indian Rotary team had two mechanics and two photographers: they looked after the catering (such wonderful food!) and accommodation, and had ensured motorcycles were available, rather than participants having to import their own bikes. 

One of the most enjoyable part of the trip was the enthusiasm of the children they saw en route: the children provided welcomes and entertainment in several venues. 

Riding the motorcycles was a challenge however, with heavy traffic but no traffic lights, numerous tuk-tuks on the road, cows and dogs everywhere. 

They visited schools and hospitals who had been beneficiaries of Rotary projects, and were given warm welcomes throughout the trip. They enjoyed fellowship with other participants and some real cultural engagement.

The project was the eighth such event run by Rotary District 3181 and in total it has raised US$150,000 over eight rides.

Mark, current president of Glenferrie Rotary Club, has ridden motorcycles since the age of 10 when he bought for $10 a scooter from a mate who had given up getting it going. Other motorcycling adventures included rides in the USA and Mongolia.
