Hawthorn Rotary Club welcomed 41 Rotarians and their guests, to its weekly meeting for the third week of August.

Sadly, today I announced to the club of the passing of member Ken McNamara's wife, Mrs Lois McNamara. We are all joined, as we extend our condolences to Ken and his family at this difficult time.

Today an update was provided to our members from the last Directors meeting held last Tuesday evening.

First being the restructuring of Club Service management by Mr Andrew Crockett followed by Mr. Denbigh Richards endorsement and support with local community projects, including the groundwork on providing packages to the Mental Health unit at Box Hill, along with a post Covid tree planting project.

Projects approved and funded was $5000 to the continued East Timor project and Medical Equipment to be provided to another Rotary club in Sri Lanka for distribution.

Again, this year we wish to support the Lord Taveners raffle, however they are currently exploring the online option for selling tickets.

Katrina Flinn is steering the initiative to sell dozens of Shiraz Wines, where our club will receive a fixed amount per case sold. Christmas lunch and packing of hampers will be another major event and I ask that members please be ready to get involved, as with the current Covid impacts, could see numbers escalate.

Let us look at September, being the first month of spring, a month of Fundraising and Membership. I encourage all members, whether it be wanting an order form for a case of wine or a wholesaler contact for masks etc to make contact to our secretary. I have sent an email today to all members with the contact details.

Today’s Guest Speaker Mr. Paul York provided an engaging discussion the Role Drones are having on Investigative work in Australia through his company SureFact.

Next Tuesday will be another interesting topic by Ms. Kerry Anderson,  Rural Entrepreneur of the Year, as she will talk about ‘The Era of the Entrepreneur.’
