PRESIDENT'S POST

Greetings from a COVID afflicted President who is doing her best to bounce back asap. Thank you to PP Doug for stepping up to cover for me at today’s meeting. Apologies John Perry for missing your Member Behind the Badge. These MBTB are important as we discover the member’s history and find we all have something in common – a need to Make a Difference.
Huge thanks to Katrina who led a team of rugged up members and Friends of Rotary Hawthorn in packing 200 Care bags. Have you ever wondered how much work and co-ordination is required to locate the contents of our Care bags? This is Community Service at its best.
Wednesday night is our first Board Meeting for the new year and we shall be discussing your responses to our Forum and incorporating some of these concepts into the year ahead. You will all receive the responses by email to gain a perspective of how our members would like to enjoy working on our projects and fellowship of Rotary Hawthorn.

NEXT WEEK’S MEETING

Tuesday, 23: Visit to the Pharaoh’s Exhibition at NGV with lunch. Thanks, Noel for organising this.

LAST MEETING

This week John Perry gave us some insight into the member behind the badge.

John grew up in Olinda in a family of 8 siblings, five boys and three girls, and parents Noel and Gwen.

The large property Glen Elborne was part bush and paddocks and eight acres of garden, with a gardener's cottage and third house.

"It was an exciting and fun place to roam as teenagers. This was before TV and the internet, and we would often range all day outdoors, and mum would say come home by five. This lifestyle engendered a love of the bush and outdoors. I still love bushwalking, nature, and the outdoors."

MEMBER CONTRIBUTIONS
Recognising Human Achievement written by Noel Halford
As Rotarians we are privileged to be in a place where we are able to use our individual talents for the benefit of those in our community who are less fortunate.
It is from these experiences we learn about wonderful personal achievements by those who have overcome enormous adversity. Sadly there are many stories that do not rise to the surface and are all too quickly lost in history unless someone is inspired to keep their memory alive. The personalities of those who have achieved are not always of a type that ensure there is a wider population awareness of their achievements, indeed many are modest and sometimes are embarrassed about the prospect of receiving any form of public recognition.
