Club Service Chair Terry Kitchen organised a members tour of Sackville Grange, an Aveo Retirement Village in Cotham Road, Kew.

Long term residents Anne Scott and Ken welcomed us as we arrived and introduced us to Christy, our guide for the day. Christy first showed us around the common and entertainment areas, including the swimming pool, gymnasium and snooker areas. She explained that there are ninety-six apartments spread over five buildings, with gardens in between and car-parking below. She then showed us a two and a there-bedroom apartment, which have been renovated ready for sale.

The apartments are strata-titled, as opposed to some other retirement villages with rental arrangements. Christy described some of the purchase arrangements in between answering our questions as she showed us around the buildings.

We then sat down to a light lunch and a chat, and were introduced to Margot Boyle, Chair of the Owners group. Margot gave us helpful hints on preparing to move to a retirement village, and a list of things to consider.

She then told us about how the Sackville Grange residents have raised money (with pot-of-soup functions) and collected blankets for Rochester residents, who are still without proper housing following the floods. Margot presented President-elect Doug McLean with a cheque for $3,000 which will be added to the club’s funds allocated in anticipation of a District Grant to assist Rochester residents. Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to take the blankets and other goods to Rochester.

Doug thanked Margot and Christy for their warm hospitality and generosity: an enjoyable and informative morning and lunch.
