Bunnings BBQ

Terry Kitchen tells us that the Club is once again holding a Bunnings BBQ as one of our major fundraising activities for the year. Please diarise Saturday 20th April at Bunnings Hawthorn in Burwood Road;  we will need many volunteers to cover all shifts from 8am - 5pm. There will be sign up sheets available at next week’s meeting, or you can contact Terry directly to indicate your availability. Please do your best to help us with this fundraising opportunity - our last BBQ raised over $2200.

Words for Today

You all know about triskaidekaphobia - extreme superstition regarding the number thirteen. 

The supposed unlucky nature of the number 13 has several theories of origin. Although several authors claim it is an older belief, no such evidence has been documented so far. In fact, the earliest attestation of 13 being unlucky is first found after the Middle Ages in Europe. - Wikipedia.

But you could do worse: take Ogdokontaheptaphobia (from ogdokonta, Greek for "eighty", and hepta, Greek for "seven") is the fear of number 87. 

87 is superstitiously considered an unlucky number in sports, specifically in Australian cricket where the final score of 87 is 13 shy of 100, a century.

Let’s hope none of our Rotary Club members are bowled out on 87.  ;-)

What’s New in Your Vocation?

We heard a whisper that Vocational Service Chairman Vincent Chen had asked some members this question, but only a few of the answers have filtered through so far.  

Vocational Service is the cornerstone of Rotary and was the key to the beginning of the Rotary ethos of service above self. Rotary's founder Paul Harris recognised that people could use their vocations to help others in the community and thus Rotary was formed and has been serving its local and international community for over 100 years.

Vincent has been doing great work in his portfolio (easily then most demanding portfolio in Rotary) this year.  

So get into gear, Rotarians, put digit to keyboard and let your fellows members know “what’s new” in your Vocation.

When you read the e-mail with our Club Bulletin, and click on “Read more”, you are taken to a Web Page.  At the foot of this page, there is usually a dialogue box where you may add a comment:

However, some members don’t see the dialogue box, so we wonder if this is a function of ClubRunner, e-mail, the browser you use, or just the weather.  David Rush, for instance, formerly received the dialogue box, but not now.

Webmaster Ian Bentley is investigating the mystery.

DIK Report

At the end of the store’s operations in December, a farewell lunch was held to acknowledge the work of Laurie Fisher and Bob Glindemann. PDG Bronwyn Stevens gave a moving tribute before DG Ron Payne read a tribute prepared by David Dippie. 

Bob and Laurie have a combined service at DiK greater than most have been in Rotary. Bob began his commitment in 2000 after returning to Melbourne after so many years all around Oceania with Shell. Laurie came from Rotary West Footscray, lured by Bill Dagg to the work. 

Together, their incredible dedication and expertise supervising over 2 million volunteer hours, the loading of 679 containers and the dispersal of goods valued at more than $75o million to many disadvantaged communities and countries is a feat we are in awe of. And so many of these valuable items would have ended up in landfill.

Bookworms

The Bookworms are currently reading “The Silkworm” by Robert Galbraith, (a pen-name for J. K. Rowling)  Rowling has been in the news again: Breitbart.com reports:

Writer J.K. Rowling continued her attack on the woke, woman-hating, left with a Mother’s Day message mocking the “inclusive” language favored by the LGBTQ crowd.

With Mother’s Day being celebrated in the UK on March 10, the British author jumped to her X account and posted a message ridiculing the left’s penchant for erasing women with language that neutralizes their actual gender.

“Happy Birthing Parent Day to all whose large gametes were fertilised resulting in small humans whose sex was assigned by doctors making mostly lucky guesses,” she wrote in her first post.

After the usual suspects jumped in to attack her, Rowling then added a reply reading, “Devastated and bewildered that my embrace of inclusive language has angered its most enthusiastic devotees, so let’s just say: Happy Mother’s Day to all females who’ve raised children.”
