The Boroondara Antique & Collectables Fair is organised by the Rotary Club of Kew, a local non-profit organisation that supports
the community and broader initiatives, sharing a common commitment to service above self. Proceeds from the Fair will be principally used to support Youth Education Scholarships through the Education Chances Foundation and local charities.

Rotary SAFE Families Inclusive Communities Initiative
February is Rotary’s peace and Conflict Prevention Month, of course, and Dorothy Gilmour has certainly been pulling her weight. The Podcast made from her interview for Somalian SBS Radio last Friday is mostly in Somalian language with a couple of comments in English from Peter Berg and herself. “What a hoot!” she said. We hope Somalian Australians may benefit from this Podcast in our mission to keep families together whilst preventing family violence.

Do you need a new car?
At our last meeting, some car enthusiasts were comparing the good and bad points of their cars. One brought up the story about one of his friends, Bob Down.
Bob had bought himself one of those self-driving EV's.
He couldn't wait to bring it over and show his mates about the fancy hi-tech amenities it came with.
Then he started going on about his old fashioned gasoline powered car and how it was such an antique bucket of bolts, then made fun of us for not keeping up with the times.
Bob was so proud!
Then Bob missed a couple of payments on his EV, and woke up one morning to find that the car had driven itself back to the dealer.
Now Bob rides a bicycle.
Word of the Day
I was inspired by Andrew Crockett’s “Lingua File” to improve my shonky vocabulary, and I now subscribe to a newsletter from Dictionary.com
Words like quotidian, wyvern, discombobulate, sycophant, sesquipedalian, weltschmertz, risible, cavil and jannock have all popped up recently. Can you see yourself in there somewhere? How can I fit them into The Bulletin? Some days the word really jumps out at me: I’m sure you’ll like this one.
On the other hand, Rotarians are all familiar with “vocation” (aren’t you?) but do you know about “avocation”?
An avocation is an activity that someone engages in as a hobby outside their main occupation. There are many examples of people whose professions were the ways that they made their livings, but for whom their activities outside their workplaces were their true passions in life. Wikipedia
Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras, is a festive day celebrated in France on Shrove Tuesday (the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday), which marks the close of the pre-Lenten season. The French name Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday, from the custom of using all the fats in the home before Lent in preparation for fasting and abstinence.
In 2024, it fell on 13th February. Many Aussies think it is about something totally different.

Celebrate Rotary’s Anniversary
On 23 February 1905, four men – Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey and Paul Harris – gathered at Loehr’s office, Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago, for what would later be known as the first Rotary club meeting.

Katrina Flinn has received a letter from staff at The Alfred Hospital detailing the importance of our project Small Comfort from Communit
y supplying care bags and clothing to local hospital mental health wards.
Can you attend the upcoming care bag packing session? The plan is to pack 200-220 care bags in this session (3-4 months supply).
When? Tuesday 26th March, 9.30am to 12 noon (Zoom Rotary meeting this day, so hopefully this allows time for you to attend the packing session and get home in time to attend the Zoom meeting)
Where? The usual place (attendees will be advised the address)
