Farewell to a Rotary Great

Family, friends, and Rotary colleagues were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Robert “Bob” Aitken on April 20, 2024, aged 78. Bob was an outstanding and popular Rotarian who took on many roles in our organisation and the wider community. Amongst the many people and causes he supported in a lifetime of service, his passion and dedication to the cause of ending polio was legendary.

To mark Rotary’s 104th birthday, Bob spearheaded a campaign which saw the sails of the Sydney Opera House lit up with Rotary’s End Polio Now message on February 24, 2009.

Spotted at RISPPO

Trustee Dennis Shore joined the group at  Rotary International South Pacific and Philippines Office in Norwest, to update attendees on the activities of the Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees and emphasise the importance of Trustee Chair elect Mark Maloney’s “5 Magical Markers”.

It’s a tough life, Dennis and Lynda, sampling Kangaroo and other local delicacies.

(Although Dennis confides he had a "real" steak)

Rushes in Spain

Sue and David Rush are holidaying in Spain, and they sent us some lovely photos.

David says they are cycling, but they are obviously sampling the wines, and they are certainly not roughing it!

Salud, amor y pesetas, y tiempo para gastarlas.

Adolescents’ Mental Halth

As if it were a follow-up to Rashi Kapoor’s recent article on Youth Services, Rotary In Review has an article “Stepping up to protect adolescents’ mental health”.

It states: “Across the United States, one in six children over age six have a diagnosed mental health disorder. And yet, only around half receive adequate treatment.”

It then describes how three members of the Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch, near Denver, took a novel approach to the problem.

This is only one of the reasons we support AustralianRotary Health.

Rotary’s Climate Therapy

“As the Earth’s climate alters, regions around the world are facing more intense storms, wildfires, floods, extreme heat, and other phenomena.”

Another feature from the May issue of Rotary in Review magazine explains that taking part in collective action may help relieve eco-anxiety.

Does that include drinking the Kool-Aid?

Back on Deck

How nice to see Dorothy Gilmour back after her recent car accident, where she was shunted on the Freeway,

As large as life, and swapping yarns with visitor Norm Franzi. Stay well, Dorothy!
