“MacArthur Park”
PDG Greg Ross excelled himself on “Who wants to be a Millionaire” this week. Before the former star of “Cop Shop” walked away with a $1000 prize, he managed to sing a song and give Australian Rotary Health a plug. Surprisingly, Greg struck out when he couldn’t identify the location of the song “MacArthur Park”.
As the composer Jimmy Webb once explained:
Everything in the song was visible. There's nothing in it that's fabricated. The old men playing checkers by the trees, the cake that was left out in the rain, all of the things that are talked about in the song are things I actually saw. And so it's a kind of musical collage of this whole love affair that kind of went down in MacArthur Park. ... Back then, I was kind of like an emotional machine, like whatever was going on inside me would bubble out of the piano and onto paper.
Oh well, Australian Rotary Health just missed out on another contribution.
DIK Update
We are still working at DIK in West Footscray, sorting the clothes, wheelchairs and medical stuff.
Storeman Laurie Fisher and DIK Chairman Bob Glindemann are due to retire at the end of the year, and no substitutes have yet been found. Who knows what will happen: will the store close, and if so, who will pay for dumping a woodshed-full of goods?
Whatever happens, can someone come and help with a couple of hours, light work, any Thursday?
All Over the World
(and many other places, too) At least that’s what it seems, each time we receive another chapter of “Noel and Marjorie’s Northern Safari”. Cape Revenue, Cygnet Beach, where next?
What a great author Noel is turning out to be, with his engaging anecdotes about the trip and those great photos: we have a few episodes ready for next week!
Keep them coming, Noel!
