Our guest speaker at today’s Club meeting by Zoom was Gemma Moir-Meyer, a Ph.D. candidate and researcher at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute.
Gemma spoke brilliantly on the topic of iron and anaemia, ‘a Careful Balancing Act Between Health and Disease’. I’ll leave our medically trained editor to explain some of the technical aspects of the talk, but Gemma made the topic accessible to her predominantly lay audience with her clear explanations and excellent slides.
What wonderful work Gemma’s team, and other medical research teams in Australia, are doing to develop breakthrough treatments for a range of morbidities that have eluded treatment in the past.
My thanks to Jill Weeks for securing Gemma at short notice.
A report on Gemma’s talk is below.

Thoughts for the Week
As I near the end of my presidency I thought I’d conclude my ‘Thoughts for the Week’ with a uniquely Rotary focus. Over the next five weeks, I’m going to serialise the talk I gave to the Club on 1 October 2019 about the ethical principles underpinning the Four-way Test and how practical the test is as a decision-making tool.
Each part will appear as a separate article in the Bulletin under the heading ‘Thoughts for the Week’.
Part 1 of the series is below.
