Camcare collections
The meeting last week was our final chance to collect goods for Camcare this year and in total the Club donated non-perishable goods worth $450 which was very much appreciated by Camcare. The goods were collected sorted and delivered to Camcare by Denbigh with assistance from Sue Z.
Salvo Hawks
The Salvo Hawks have been asked to host an additional game for Odessey House on Wed 9th August as a home game. We have agreed to provide our normal assistance for the game with Club Member’s required as goal umpires, scoreboard operators and the pizza run so anyone free tomorrow from noon to 1:30 pm are welcome to join Bigmac and myself.
Balwyn Rotary Youth Exchange Support
The Balwyn Rotary Club have agreed to host an inbound Rotary Exchange student Hilla Karppinen from Finland in 2023-24. Hilla arrived in Australia last week and will be attending Koonung Secondary College.
Russell Jones President of Balwyn has been in touch to inquire if any Hawthorn Members would be interesting in hosting Hilla for part of her time in Australia.
Balwyn currently have one Member family hosting her but would like to have a second or even two other Rotary families involved to enable Hilla a broader experience in Australia.
If you would like additional information feel free to contact me and I will follow up with Russell.
Upcoming Events
Rotary Hawthorn 70th Anniversary Dinner.
· Numbers for the Club’s 70th Anniversary Dinner are still lower than we would like – our target is to have 70 guests and we are currently below 60. We are at the point where we need members to commit so the organising committee can finalise logistics and catering. Please don’t leave it to the last minute to purchase your ticket - if you need assistance, contact Terry on 0419 508821.
· District Governor Ron Payne will be the guest speaker at our meeting on 19th September at Kooyong. The lunch meeting will be followed at 2pm by a Board meeting to be attended by Ron as well.
· Rotary Club of Nhill weekend 25th & 26th November. A reminder to save these dates in your diary as we are planning a Club visit and the Nhill Club will organise a special dinner with the local Myanmar community. Noel Halford has organised a group booking at the Zero Inn Nhill; you can contact them on 03 5391 1622 to confirm your accommodation.
Tuesday 8th August is a Club Board meeting and I will provide an update at next week’s meeting on the matters discussed and resolutions passed.
The next in-person Club meeting is on Tuesday 15st August at Kooyong and the guest speaker will be Henry Drury, sharing with us a Member Behind the Badge talk. Henry has been a long-term member of the Club since 1991 and has been involved in a large number of Club projects over the years so I’m sure he has some interesting tales to share.
There will be no meeting on Tuesday 22nd August due to the Anniversary Dinner being held on Thursday 24th.
Doug McLean
President 2023-24
