PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Last weekend’s Multi-District Impact Summit in Horsham had plenty going for it—good company, lively conversations, and some genuinely engaging speakers. But the session that stayed with me most was the panel with Past RI President Jennifer Jones, our own Dennis Shore, and Jessie Harmon.
It reinforced something that most experienced Rotarians already know, but don’t always remember.
Rotarians reach their most ambitious goals through the combined efforts of the individual, the club, and the Foundation.
It starts, as it always has, with the individual. Someone notices something that could be better, or has an idea worth pursuing. That’s the spark. Rotary doesn’t manufacture that - people do. Indeed, each speaker at the conference, a Rotarian or not, was spurred into action by observing a need or through sometimes tragic lived experience. The difference between the Rotarians and the non-Rotarians is that the Rotarians had Rotary's power behind them to help them meet the need.
The club is where the idea is turned into a practical reality. It’s tested, shaped and reframed. Others bring their experience and judgment, and gradually what started as one person’s thought becomes something workable.
And then there’s the Foundation.
Jennifer Jones described the Foundation as the financial engine of Rotary. Together with the collaboration between clubs, it provides extraordinary leverage, multiplying thousands of dollars into tens of thousands and, in some cases, even more. It allows us to take what would otherwise be a modest project and lift it into something much more substantial. Our contributions don’t just sit on their own; they’re combined, matched, and multiplied.
That’s the piece we can easily overlook. Within the confines of a club, a project might seem overwhelming or even impossible. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s unrealistic. It may simply mean we haven’t yet thought about how to use the Foundation to back it.
What we can begin, the Foundation can help expand.
Seen that way, Rotary is a powerful model. It connects individual initiative with collective effort, and then backs it with the financial strength to make a real difference.
It starts with one person.
It grows through the club.
And with the Foundation behind it, it can go much further than we might first imagine.
