Nhill is an important rural service centre surrounded by merino sheep grazing and the Wimmera wheatbelt.

In 1844, squatters Dugald Macpherson and George Belcher came upon a large swamp and lagoon known to the local Wotjobaluk Aboriginal people as Nyell, which is believed to describe mist or spirits over the water but could also mean red clay.

The town of Nhill was first surveyed in 1879 when a Flour Mill was constructed, and by 1890, it had a general store and post office.
In 1919 the Flour Silo was expanded, and until its closure in 1958, it was the single largest concrete silo in the Southern Hemisphere. It has since been replaced by more modern silos owned by Graincorp.

In 1897 a major tornado destroyed most of Nhill except for the Post Office, which still stands today.
The other significant event occurred in 2019 when the Rotary Club of Hawthorn led by President Ian Bentley visited Nhill as guests of the Rotary Club of Nhill and benefited from meeting some of the Karen people from Myanmar who have made Nhill their home and contribute so much to the culture of the town.

On the 25th November our club will return to Nhill and enjoy the unique opportunity of being involved as Rotary clubs from the city and Wimmera combine their efforts in supporting the displaced Karen people from Myanmar.
