Aussie Word of the Week
This week we are cruising around the traps. Relax, we haven't set an ambush for you, rather, the traps refer to any place you frequent, as in I've seen him around the traps. Aussie slang since the 1930s, the traps originally referred to a route along which a person had laid traps which they then habitually visited to collect the game that had been caught.
To go round the traps means to visit the places where people gather and talk in the hope of getting information, or more specifically, gossip.

Kicking Woke Goals
Are you a life-time supporter of the Melbourne Football club? Not anymore. You are now a supporter of the ‘Narrm’ Football Club, whether you like it or not.
According to the Melbourne Football Club, changing the name to Narrm, the traditional Aboriginal name for Melbourne, is part of the club’s vision of ‘reconciliation’ to ‘unite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with non-Indigenous people, to understand and embrace history, culture and community.’

Copyright Capers
Twitter is a cesspool of copyright infringements, according to music publishers who are suing the Elon Musk-owned social media platform.
In a lawsuit filed in Tennessee on June 14, the National Music Publishers’ Association sued Twitter on behalf of several publishers representing some of the industry’s biggest artists for violating copyright law. - Quartz

Shameful “Pride”
A video in London’s Regent Street, showing a Union Jack being thrown to the ground, to be replaced with a intersex-inclusive Pride flag, has gone viral, with droves of internet users describing the video as “sad” and “shameful”.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion have clearly replaced good manners and respect.
Moorabbin Airport Visit
On Tuesday 11th July, your Vocational Service Committee warmly invites you, your partner and friends to visit the most interesting Aviation Museum in Moorabbin Airport.
After arrival 12:00 noon at the Administration Office, those attending will be welcome and addressed by the General Manager, Paul Ferguson who will cover the early history, present and the future of the airport that provides an extensive range of civil aviation services.
Then you will be provided a 30-minute guided tour of the aviation museum on site, followed by a light BBQ lunch self-catered by our Rotary Club. Please feel free to invite guests.
I am sure you will find this a most interesting vocational visit.
Please use the link to register your attendance: HERE
If you have any difficulty registering, please contact Vincent Chen.
Cormac McCarthy
Our Bookwo
rms will be sad to read that Cormac McCarthy, a bleak and brutal titan of American literature, has died at the age of 89.
McCarthy — arguably the greatest American writer since Ernest Hemingway or William Faulkner, both of whom he was sometimes compared to — was little known for the first 60 years or so of his life.
But rapturous reviews of 1992's All the Pretty Horses, the first in McCarthy's The Border Trilogy, changed all that. The book was made into a movie, as were 2005's No Country for Old Men and 2006's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Road.
Full Story: HERE
Our Bookworms have enjoyed his books, (and especially the movie “No Country for Old Men”) but we found his latest, “The Passenger” and “Stella Maris” to be heavy going.
Did you Have a Good Weekend?
The Queen’s Birthday public holiday is now referred to as the King’s Birthday because that’s how monarchy works apparently.
Somehow, the gendered change of this public holiday has done nothing to outrage the average Aussie, nor has the fact that it changes date every year.
(AFP) — Joe Biden on Friday left Americans scratching their heads with an off-the-cuff remark that was, well, royally unusual for a US president: “God save the queen, man!”
Hawthorn Rotary’s Journey 1953 - 2023
Terry Kitchen reminds us that members and guests are invited to celebrate our Club’s 70th Anniversary.
Please save the date: Thursday 24 August at 6.30pm and look out for the official invitation which will be sent to all current and past members shortly.
An Invitation
We received this lovely invitation from Norman Gale, Camberwell Salvation Army:
You may be aware that we have been undertaking significant renovations at our 7 Bowen Street site recently.
The renovations are now complete and we are pleased to invite you all to attend our Opening and Open Day, on Sunday, 16th July.
You are welcome to come to the ribbon cutting at 9:45am and subsequent service, of if you prefer to come to the Open Day celebrations following the service from 11am.
We would love to see you and show you around.
Tuesday’s Meeting
Yes, it all went well, with President-elect Doug standing in (seamlessly, as they say) for President Andrew, who has been upholding the principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion by sharing his Covid with Pam. We wish them both a speedy recovery.
The meeting was brightened by the presence of David Corrigan, who was presented with an Honorary Membership, and a brief presentation from Angela Taft (left) of Rotary Safe Families. Angela showed us a book on family violence, prepared especially for Timor.
Vocational Chairman Vincent Chen gave us a brief run-down on upcoming events: Commodore Peter Scott Via ZOOM, on Running Deep: An Australian Submarine Life, and a Visit to Moorabbin Airport Museum.
Those of us who went on the trip to Nhill a few years ago, will recall the Airport Museum there: a fun day!
And last but not least, birthday boy Geoff Wright: Happy Birthday, Geoff!
What’s Up Next Week?
Be sure to Zoom into Commodore (Ret) Peter Scott who will talk about “Running Deep: An Australian Submarine Life”
From conducting top-secret missions to making history commanding the farthest deployment of Australian submarine service, Commodore Peter Scott depicts what it takes to be a Submariner.
This is sure to be informative and fun. See you on Zoom?
