Breakthrough? New Treatment Approaches in Alzheimer’s Disease Currently available Alzheimer’s treatments are of limited benefit. With the number of cases worldwide expected to triple in the next 30 years, there is an urgent need to find treatments that treat the cause of the disease, rather than just mask the symptoms. Steve Macfarlane has been running Alzheimer’s trials for almost 20 years, including a Melbourne-based study of a new drug, Anavex 2-73, in which patients have shown signs of significant benefit ‘When Melbourne was selected as the first city in the world to test Anavex a year ago, lead researcher Associate Professor Steve Macfarlane had no idea how much of an impact it would make. ‘……seem to be significantly improved in terms of what they can do. It is function that has improved and in many cases mood as well,” Prof Macfarlane said. ‘To me, seeing real improvements to patients is much more important than seeing a statistically significant improvement on a rating scale’. A Most Compelling and Inspiring Speaker....Note: Meeting At Auburn High School
Aug 22, 2017
Please meet in the foyer of Auburn High School at 11a.m Manny Hendrix Jr gives the 'most compelling and inspiring talks on life skills coaching for young people in both sport and positive lives rather than progression to the ‘dark side’. A high-rated US basketball player, his points included: # Young people commonly become ‘at risk’ because they are not given key information about life choices. In the US he has even taken youngsters - lacking parental and school advisers - to visit a prison and see first-hand where a life style of being on the streets after 1am can lead # Young people set themselves facile goals like sporting heroism and rich lifestyles without understanding that the ‘process’ is the important thing, not the goal. He gave examples from his own sport career - like playing basketball in his childhood while almost clinically blind (he could recognise his team and opponents and court positions but no detail. His sight was then restored). Thereafter, he explained in his talk how he went to extreme lengths and sacrifices to out-compete his cohort and rise through the basketball ranks. Hendrix, who has a 201cm wingspan, made the 2015 and 2016 Division 2 Big V All Star Five and won the 2016 MVP Award. He led Collingwood All Stars into the finals during his first season in the team’s second year. ' Chair: Noel Halford |

Seven Summits and Virgin On Insanity

'I don’t feel as though I’ve ever had a job, but I’ve had several interests for which I’ve been fortunate enough to be paid: ski technician, Antarctic field assistant, Royal Marines Commando, high altitude mountain guide, rock climbing instructor, barista and founding director of the UK based mountaineering company, Jagged Globe. The toughest job I had was being unemployed. When I could climb, I was passionate about sharing the mountains with others, and about my personal rock climbing which has fed my soul all my life. Now I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned to others, especially young people. When we’re gone, all we leave behind is the impression we’ve made on others, and young people stand to inherit the most'. Chair: Ian Gillies

RI President, Australian Ian Riseley has requested that each Rotary club plant a tree for each of our members as a practical way of demonstrating how Rotary can make a difference to the environment and be an example of being able to achieve more together. We plan to meet this objective by banding with our cluster clubs to plant 200 trees at Hay's Paddock, followed by a BBQ lunch. . The morning promises to be very pleasant indeed, enjoying the outdoors, the company of friends old and new, and contributing to making a difference to our Earth The more Hawthorn members that can attend and share the load of tree planting the better and even more so to share in the BBQ lunch. The more the merrier!!

'Interplast sends teams of volunteer plastic and reconstructive surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and allied health professionals to provide life-changing surgery and medical training in 17 countries across the Asia Pacific region. We do this in partnership with local organisations, including hospitals, universities and local NGOs. Our mission is to ‘repair bodies and rebuild lives’ and we do this through providing surgical services to those who could not otherwise afford or access these, and by building the capacity of local medical systems through our training and mentoring programs. Interplast is a fully accredited NGO with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), registered by the Australian Charities and Not For Profit Commission and is a signatory to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) Code of Conduct'. The Glass Soldier
Nov 21, 2017
'Don Farrands is the grandson of the Glass Soldier, NH Ferguson. Don is a commercial lawyer, chartered accountant, and director. He has significant and varied experience in law, commerce, the arts, and community organisations including in the disability sector. He lives in Melbourne. This is the true story of a young Australian soldier whose life of opportunity was challenged by trauma and salvaged by strength. Nelson Ferguson, from Ballarat, was a stretcher-bearer on the Western Front in France in World War I. He survived the dangers of stretcher-bearing in some of Australias most horrific battles: the Somme, Bullecourt, Ypres and Villers-Bretonneux. In April 1918, at Villers-Bretonneux, he was severely gassed. His eyes were traumatised, his lungs damaged. Upon his return home, he met and married Madeline, the love of his life, started a family, and resumed his career teaching art. But eventually the effects of the mustard gas claimed his eyesight, ending his career. Courageously enduring this consequence of war, he continued contributing to society by assisting his son and son-in-law in their stained-glass window business. Advances in medicine finally restored his sight in 1968, allowing him to yet again appreciate the beauty around him, before his death in 1976. The story of this Anzac will stir your soul. It is a story of war and bravery, pain and strength, hope and miracles'. Chairman: Geoff Dumayne |

Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch
Dec 05, 2017
Suzanne was a member of Hawthorn Rotary for a number of years and some members may remember her. Suzanne attended the last Boroondara Police Open Day in October 2014 and purely out of interest spoke to the then Chair of Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch. After being a member for 12 months she took the surprising action to nominate for the position of Chair as she felt Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch should be seen to be active in the community complying with its purpose which is to assist Boroondara Police with crime prevention. Generally most activities have police involvement with a number of volunteers. From 1986-2009 Borondara Neighbourhood Watch had 62 areas with about 1000+ residences in each area. With an absolute minimum of 10 persons in each area there well in excess of 1,000 + volunteers. Today there are 5 areas in Kew, Kew East, Balwyn, Balwyn North and Camberwell with a total of 200 volunteers many of whom are now in their 80’s and 90’s. We are now Boroondara-wide with less than 200 volunteers and a core of active volunteers totaling 15. As you will see Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch may be small but are actively involved in crime prevention in Boroondara. Chair: Sheridan Brown |
