RI President, Australian Ian Riseley has requested that each Rotary club plant a tree for each of our members as a practical way of demonstrating how Rotary can make a difference to the environment and be an example of being able to achieve more together. We plan to meet this objective by banding with our cluster clubs to plant 200 trees at Hay's Paddock, followed by a BBQ lunch. . The morning promises to be very pleasant indeed, enjoying the outdoors, the company of friends old and new, and contributing to making a difference to our Earth The more Hawthorn members that can attend and share the load of tree planting the better and even more so to share in the BBQ lunch. The more the merrier!!

We do this in partnership with local organisations, including hospitals, universities and local NGOs. Our mission is to ‘repair bodies and rebuild lives’ and we do this through providing surgical services to those who could not otherwise afford or access these, and by building the capacity of local medical systems through our training and mentoring programs. Interplast is a fully accredited NGO with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), registered by the Australian Charities and Not For Profit Commission and is a signatory to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) Code of Conduct'. The Glass Soldier
Nov 21, 2017
'Don Farrands is the grandson of the Glass Soldier, NH Ferguson. Don is a commercial lawyer, chartered accountant, and director. He has significant and varied experience in law, commerce, the arts, and community organisations including in the disability sector. He lives in Melbourne. This is the true story of a young Australian soldier whose life of opportunity was challenged by trauma and salvaged by strength. Nelson Ferguson, from Ballarat, was a stretcher-bearer on the Western Front in France in World War I. He survived the dangers of stretcher-bearing in some of Australias most horrific battles: the Somme, Bullecourt, Ypres and Villers-Bretonneux. In April 1918, at Villers-Bretonneux, he was severely gassed. His eyes were traumatised, his lungs damaged. Upon his return home, he met and married Madeline, the love of his life, started a family, and resumed his career teaching art. But eventually the effects of the mustard gas claimed his eyesight, ending his career. Courageously enduring this consequence of war, he continued contributing to society by assisting his son and son-in-law in their stained-glass window business. Advances in medicine finally restored his sight in 1968, allowing him to yet again appreciate the beauty around him, before his death in 1976. The story of this Anzac will stir your soul. It is a story of war and bravery, pain and strength, hope and miracles'. Chairman: Geoff Dumayne |

Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch
Dec 05, 2017
Suzanne was a member of Hawthorn Rotary for a number of years and some members may remember her. Suzanne attended the last Boroondara Police Open Day in October 2014 and purely out of interest spoke to the then Chair of Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch. After being a member for 12 months she took the surprising action to nominate for the position of Chair as she felt Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch should be seen to be active in the community complying with its purpose which is to assist Boroondara Police with crime prevention. Generally most activities have police involvement with a number of volunteers. From 1986-2009 Borondara Neighbourhood Watch had 62 areas with about 1000+ residences in each area. With an absolute minimum of 10 persons in each area there well in excess of 1,000 + volunteers. Today there are 5 areas in Kew, Kew East, Balwyn, Balwyn North and Camberwell with a total of 200 volunteers many of whom are now in their 80’s and 90’s. We are now Boroondara-wide with less than 200 volunteers and a core of active volunteers totaling 15. As you will see Boroondara Neighbourhood Watch may be small but are actively involved in crime prevention in Boroondara. Chair: Sheridan Brown |

Stability In Mind
Feb 06, 2018
Neil Cole, Author: ‘Stability In Mind’ ‘This memoir is the story of the first politician in Australia to publicly admit to having a mental illness - bipolar mood disorder. Neil Cole was a lawyer, a Melbourne City Councillor and a Member of the Victorian Parliament. After only five years in parliament he was diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder and put onto lithium. The revelation, the cathartic experience of this diagnosis changed his life forever. Having lived with the unpleasantness of the illness, the lack of diagnosis over a period of seventeen years since he first sought treatment, and the onset of the illness, made it difficult to adjust Finally, whether it is his early life, school, university, family upbringing, politics or the stage it is all interesting, novel, lots of humour, pathos, and revelation about living with a mental illness. The memoir will offer hope and an explanation of how to live with bipolar mood disorder’. Neil's current play is: 'Nina Simone; Liberian Days. At : Prahran's 'Chapel Off Chapel' Chair: Henry Drury
