Rotary International's monthly theme for August is dedicated to Membership and New Club Development Month. This is a key time to reflect on the vitality of Rotary, welcome new members and strengthen diversity.
Recruitment is not just about numbers: it is also about finding motivated people, ready to act for the common good. It is also an opportunity to create new clubs, adapted to local realities and to rising generations.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
When I spent a weekend in Bendigo with the District 9800 President-Elects for two days of workshops and presentations, a question was asked: "We need to ask ourselves and our members: are we relevant to younger people?"
I took note of this, as our young people are our future, and sometimes we find it difficult to engage with them. Many of us simply give up, perhaps thinking they don't want to hear from us — that we're outdated, or that we don't connect with their reality of the world.
I have learnt so much from my one grandchild, Poppy. She is now 18 and drives me to lunch in the country. We have wonderful conversations, and I think we have a beautiful connection because I have always listened to her and asked questions without offering my own thoughts unless asked — remembering always to try to see what she sees through her eyes, not through mine at her age.
Kevin Love Chair Rotary Victoria Police Leadership Mentoring Program
The Victoria Police Leaders Mentoring Program (VPLMP) is a collaborative initiative connecting senior Victoria Police officers with experienced mentors from Rotary Clubs in D9800 and the Victorian business community. Running annually for 12 months, the program pairs select police leaders—typically Senior Sergeants and above—with professional mentors to foster leadership development, broaden perspectives, and drive community-focused innovation projects.

CLUB NEWS
Thank you to all our Rotarians who bought Raffle Tickets this year from the Rotary Club of Waverley Raffle. They celebrated raising more than $1,000,000 over the past 10 years for local groups including:
Community service groups
Equipment purchases
Facility upgrades
Local community programs
Youth development initiatives
They also invited the Rotary Clubs who have participated in selling tickets to attend the Prize Giving Event at GEELY motors in Oakleigh.
President Dorothy once again attended this event and won $1,000 for our Club!

MEMBER MATTERS
Here is the latest Zoning Map from Rotary International. We are now officially part of Zone 9! I shall not comment but post this picture for you all.
OPERATION UPLIFT
Well I am waiting for some action! Where are the “bras”? If we don’t fill a case with bras by November, we will have “egg on our faces” when we visit Rotary Portland in November.
We are going to give them a case of bras by hook or by crook! There are 2 Rotary Fijian Rotary Clubs who are very appreciative to receive these shipments as they support local women who struggle to find their size in Fiji. Anyone who has visited Fiji is aware of the humid, tropical climate. You would not be aware that the women struggle with horrible skin conditions and fungal lesions as they cannot find bras to wear.
I am asking that you take the attached flyer with you when shopping and ask a lingerie store for a donation. Or if you have bras that are in really good condition, please donate them. Bring to our meetings at Kooyong for us to sort and pack to take to Portland. Thank you.
The Membership Committee has arranged this event to attract new members to join the club and our Guest Speaker Microsoft’s Anshul Chopra will focus on the use of Artificial Intelligence for businesses.
The Breakfast will be held at Kooyong on Friday 21August from 7:30am to 9:00am and prior registration is essential.
Members please note: The Small Comforts care bag project is expanding and Katrina needs some packers to pack bags for Upton House and Normandy House.

Rotary Hawthorn volunteers at DIK
How disappointing it is to report that not one member has signed up for our Rotary Hawthorn second Thursday of every month at DIK!
Why is it the same couple of people who fill in the gaps every time for our Rotary projects?
It is one of the few activities we currently have that lets us work together as a team, doing necessary, practical work.
Signing up in advance helps. It means you have set the time aside well in advance, and it means John Perry is not left chasing people up at the last minute.
Our Foundation Director, Charlotte England is inviting us to a Polio Society Afternoon Tea:
The Polio Society which is open to all Rotarians is holding an afternoon tea on Saturday 5 September. This is a good chance for all members and particularly more recent members to learn about the huge commitment Rotary International has in the ongoing support to End Polio globally.
Polio Plus Society Afternoon Tea on Saturday 5th September at 2.30pm.
The Guest Speaker will be PDG Murray Verso who will speak on the “Cultural History of Poliomyelitis”.

SALVO HAWKS REPORT FOR 29 JULY GAME
It was a very cold and rainy day but with some sun - a typical Melbourne Day that greeted all players Wednesday 29 July 2026 for the Salvo Hawks / Windana V’s Sunbury / Bendigo for Round 10 at Victoria Road Reserve Park -Victoria Road, Hawthorn East.
Two top quality young Field Umpires with senior VAFA experience controlled the game giving each player a chance to perform to their skill level with particular importance with involving the not so skilled and the Female players it was nice to see many passages of handball play. For the Winners of this game:
"While we travelled up the west coast, the presence of Rotary is never far away.
The memorial to the greatest naval disaster of WW2 is very impressive and honours the 615 Australian Naval personnel of The Sydney who lost their lives when attacked by German destroyer flying under a false flag.
The first pic acknowledges the Rotary Club of Geraldton who worked tirelessly to have the memorial given Australian Government recognition.
Pic 2 is the memorial.
The final pic is a sculpture of woman looking directly to the horizon where the Sydney met its end.”

The Lorne Conference venue in 1958-59 did not have a full liquor licence so Room 98 was the “hot spot” with a well-stocked refrigerator.
Much spirituous encouragement and enjoyment occurred in Room 98 and a positive result each evening, was the production of a lively, ‘spirited’ two-page Bulletin on events of the day and program for the next one!
