As always the man behind the badge address brings up fascinating facts, and often leads the audience into quite unpredictable subject matters. Ian Gillies’ talk was no different. Ian, just recently inducted as member, saw sponsor and Chairman for the day Bill Troedel provide the first revelation , Ian is a current business partner of Will Hamilton (son of long term club stalwart Ian Hamilton). Surely that connection must have something to do with Ian joining Hawthorn Rotary.
That the business is the firm of financial advisers “Hamilton Wealth Management” saw the address almost deviate at the end in to a detailed technical discussion on financial planning as the audience probed Ian’s past and perhaps some sought free advice into his inklings about the current economic prospects.
Before that however we learnt that Ian originally a Queenslander, was needless to say a Rugby Union devotee with moderate playing skill but great admin capacity as evidenced by his long term role as president of the Melbourne University Rugby Union team. This passion developed after contrary stints at school, first Aussie Rules (a wingman?..with his build he must have been a ruckman) for a short couple of weeks, and then soccer for some further years.
With a Queensland country town upbringing, including rabbits and all that, and then a time at Brisbane Grammar, he became a Victorian when his father’s employment necessitated a move to Shepparton. Various employment and studies until the age of 27, and catering was a strong focus, saw him move into the financial planning industry at that time in the early 1980’s when Superannuation was became very topical.
A role with Noble Lowndes ( first with bond sales),then with Potter Warburg, and then next with big conglomerants UBS ( Wealth Planning and Management) and later Credit Suisse ( Wealth Planning Private Banking) all provided a wonderful experience in Australia and overseas and an understanding of domestic and international finance markets.
Always at the forefront of client contact and especially enjoying that aspect of business , a couple of years back Ian joined with Will Hamilton to form a boutique wealth management advisory firm servicing personal clients. On reflection he remarked of his great satisfaction in this type of business after the bureaucratic often backroom nature of big firms.
There were odd asides raised along the way. Perhaps a telling one was the story of his time in Adelaide, and love of bagpipes..a hidden talent. In a pipe band he marched and “blew” for 5 kilometres among city streets at a certain festival. Absolutely exhausted and flagging he told of his sheer joy at the end in seeing the beaming face of an 8 year aboringal lad enjoing the parade. Ian’s tiredness went, and perhaps kindled a latent “service above self” commitment.

1. Emergency Service Awards now at Hawthorn Town Hall.
At first as a woman I saw Rotary as a challenge to do something for the community(not breach the male doors of Rotary). Now for me it is a very important platform from which to help communities world wide. The Rotary structure is critical, it provides the opportunity to get involved even in a most minor way, in projects everywhere across the world. That would not be possible as an individual.

Thank goodness! The Shadow is indeed relieved to learn that the President has confirmed ‘straight from the horse’s mouth’ that Stephen Bowtell is engaged – and, yes, engaged to Lisette, whom we have seen at a few club functions. Stephen has, apparently, put the planning of the wedding firmly into Lisette’s hands. So now may be the time for his wiser Rotary friends to counsel participation in the wedding planning; and oversighting of its budget!
It was good to see Noel Halford after a gap of many months whilst he and Marjorie were travelling round the UK etc in Marjorie’s MG. The Shadow understands that the MG behaved well but not perfectly. Something about a broken wheel spoke. Must be an old design. Or an old spoke. Or both.

Sankar Nadeson, known as the 'Mosaic Man' will speak on his four year project with Melbourne Legacy to create a mosaic marking World War 1. Described as an 'outstanding speaker who is absolutely fascinating', for the last 20 years Sankar has been involved in the fields of Community Engagement, Architecture, Interior Design and Curatorship.
Sankar has provided services to variety of clients and organisations, covering institutional, not-for-profit and commercial sectors, including: the MCG, National Sports Museum, Richmond Football Club, MCC, Commonwealth Games Federation, Villa Maria, Freemasons Victoria, Albert Park College, City of Port Phillip, Legacy and RSL Victoria.

Yarra Bend Rotary has initiated a number of awards to recognise members of Police, Ambulance, SES and fire services who do so much to contribute to the safety and wellbeing of our local communities.

Designed to recognise members of our emergency services who exceed the normal demands of their employment and deliver “Service!Above!Self” to the benefit of the local community, the Awards are judged by a panel comprising senior officers of the emergency services and Yarra Bend Rotary officials.
The awards will be presented at a gala dinner by the relevant State Ministers and the Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner Mr Craig Lapsley. Members from neighboring Rotary clubs are invited to attend.

Invitations are extended to attend a movie night at the Balwyn Cinema, 231 Whitehorse Road, on Friday October 30.
The movie is The Dressmaker. It is set in Australia and was filmed in Victoria, starring Kate Winslet and an array of renowned Australian talent. Not sure if it has a happy ending but it is described as a bittersweet, comedy-drama about love, revenge and haute couture.
Costing $20 per ticket proceeds are in support of the Bulleen Heights School which is a Dept. of Education and Training specialist school for students with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.

Gordon Cheyne our perennial bike counter alas has another last minute commitment for the day and having already registered wondered if some fellow member could take his spot.
I now find that I shall be otherwise engaged on 8th November: can anyone do my 4-hour stint on the Yarra, at Burnley, 9 am to 1pm, counting bicycles, dogs and walkers? Otherwise I’ll have to notify the Bicycle Network by the weekend, and we shall forfeit the easy money. If you can help, call me on 9500 2359 and I shall provide details of the site etc.
For those still contemplating counting, this year Super Sunday Count is being held on Sunday 8 November. It aims to collect data on the number of cyclists using or frequenting recreational trails, off road or major intersections. This data helps to build the case for better recreational infrastructure across our community.
Registrations are now open for potential counters. The count period is 9AM to 1PM.
Similar to last year, appropriate nomination of Rotary Hawthorn can see us gain the $120 (per site for a 4 hour counting stint) , if one successfully completes the count and submits the data to the central group.
If you think 4 hours is too long a stint, we can share it with fellow members and split the burden of enjoying the spring fresh air and sunshine.

Professor Kate Leslie is a specialist anaesthetist and head of anaesthesia research at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Kate has done extensive research in awareness and dreaming during anaesthesia and sedation.
