Greetings! My last eBulletin as President but I look forward to continuing as your Bulletin editor, Director of Foundation and Vice President. I think that’s enough for 2025-26.
I look back on the year and immediately I think of the members who were so helpful when I asked for some support, the many wonderful guest speakers from all walks of life and profession.
I feel very happy when a meeting is finished and members are happily sitting around and talking with fellow members and not rushing out the door. I also look back at the adventures organised by Noel Halford and am looking forward to our time together in Beechworth in November.
This time of the Rotary year is chock full of invitations to other Rotary Changeovers. At a recent Changeover Dinner, I couldn’t help but notice the difference in the atmosphere to our Dinner.
Every photo taken at our Changeover showed members and guests smiling and laughing. The feeling of friendship was potent and active. I am so proud to be a member of Rotary Hawthorn.
I thank you all for your involvement in continuing the history of fellowship and friendship that is part of our 72 year history at Rotary Hawthorn .
Onwards and Upwards Hawthorn!
So my quote for the week: “Man who throws clock, watches time fly. Also Man who wants beautiful nurse, needs to be patient.” Confucius (Me thinks it is time I go!)

PROJECT UPDATES:
New D.I.K. project:
Rotary Hawthorn’s Community Service and John Perry have created a new “hands on” project packing at Donations In Kind. John is seeking 3 volunteers (rotating on a roster) to attend DIK on the 2nd Thursday of every month.
This month: Thursday 10 July at 10.00 am. Bring your lunch and meet Colleen D’Offay at DIK. We need our members to contact John Perry to be added to the Roster so members would attend the packing day once or twice a year.
Small Comforts Care Bags:
Katrina Flinn is seeking volunteers for a packing day of the Care Bags on Tuesday, 22 July. Please contact Katrina if you are available in the morning.
Salvo Hawks Home Game:
David McNamara has advised me this morning that the Salvo Hawks match tomorrow against Wynbay Tigers has been cancelled by the Tigers. We do not need volunteers for tomorrow’s cancelled match. Thank you to those who had volunteered.
DV Safe Phones – Your old phone could save a life!
Jane Bentley and Dorothy met with Boroondara Council Executives last week and were delighted that Boroondara is endorsing our DV Safe Phone collections by placing 3 collection boxes around Boroondara.
We shall make fortnightly visits to collect these phones to send them to DV Safe Phones in Queensland where they will be professionally “cleaned” of content. They will then distributed by professional Family Violence organisations to victims of family abuse, to ensure their “safety”.
Bring your old phone to a lunch meeting and Jane Bentley and I will ensure it is used to keep a victim “safer”.READ MORE

An added Changeover Tradition is Born:
Rotary Glenferrie returned a huge wooden oar/paddle which was presented to Rotary Hawthorn in our Charter year 1953. Glenferrie had been keeping it in their cupboard at Kooyong.
Since having the oar returned to us, it has been standing in my hallway with my walking sticks and umbrellas. Not wanting to miss an opportunity of a lifetime, I designed a plaque engraved with a “ditty” and on the back of the oar, the name of our incoming President Ian Bentley.
This oar will now be handed to each incoming President as a Presidential trophy and words of encouragement. The “ditty” engraved on a silver plaque reads:
Paddle, paddle, paddle the Club
Gently down the stream,
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Presidential life is a Dream!
Who Am I?
Clue 1: “I am always in the ‘right’”!
Clue 2: “Mock Interviews have been a commitment”
Clue 3: “My initials might be:GW”
Clue 4:My better half is Susan!
