Last meeting was a club forum aimed at discussing our future, and challenges. It was an open meeting in which the three provided short but stimulating addresses to promote not only immediate discussion but material for consideration by each member. The session was kicked off by President Lawrence, who addressed the problem of developing and filling the role of future presidents.
In recent years these positions, i.e Presidents Elect and beyond, have not had a clearly defined progression list but rather filled at the "last minute". Again we face that. Two things need to be considered.
A key one is the role itself. It must and will be provided with support so the office holder has a realistic balance of Rotary and non-Rotary (e.g an overseas holiday) obligations/pursuits during the year.
There are no limitations to the person who fills the role. Subject to a certain base of experience and knowledge it could be an old hand (no bars to a second term), or newer person seeking to enhance their management, networking and social skills.
Bernie Walshe discussed the aspects of personal development and fulfillment which he had experienced in his term as president and passion for the club and Rotary. AG Gabe Hau in discussion highlighted the proud record of the club, as evidenced by its lead in District roles and promoting the creation of newer clubs in our area.
Ian Warren then introduced a concept aimed at revitalizing the membership type and numbers. Highlighting the steady decline in numbers in lunch time clubs, the change in society (more people now interact by social media than at the old "cocktail gathering") and the success of breakfast meetings and seminars for business people he tossed up the idea for a sub group connected to HRC to meet at say 7.15-8.15am yet participate in HR club projects at other times such as the weekend.
Bernie and Ian flagged that they would distribute two papers discussing matters which they raised-----Feedback from the membership is a must please-----
Lawrence reiterated his concerns re the future presidencies and asked all to
think seriously on the matter, start today,
and consider what is holding you back from volunteering to be a next president,
and then contrast these reasons against obligations as, and desire to be, a Rotarian.

Not only was AG Gabe Hau in attendance at our last lunch meeting he was a guest (my) on 96.5 Inner FM radio program, 'Rotary In Action' on Tuesday. Where does he get the time?
