PRESIDENT'S POST

Over 30 members and guests attended today’s meeting to hear our Very Experienced Member, Past District Governor and Past President Dennis Shore talk about his career and life in Rotary.  
 
Guests included Lynda Shore, PDG Ian Knight OAM and Jenny Knight, and we were joined later in the meeting by Auburn High School Assistant Principal, Ross Pritchard, and two of his students.

THE MAN BEHIND THE BADGE

In introducing PDG Dennis Shore as speaker to “The Member Behind the Badge", Henry Drury described him as “a committed Rotarian,  family man,  bon vivant,  keen golfer, and a good bloke who had held multiple roles in Rotary”.

But later when thanking Dennis for his presentation, had to admit that he had forgotten to describe him as a wonderful raconteur.

YOUTH SERVICE REVIEW

Ross Pritchard, the Assistant Principal at Auburn High School for Years 10 to 12 commented on how much the school appreciates the support it gets from Hawthorn Rotary with the Mock Interviews and other projects.
 
We were then addressed by two students who the club sponsored to attend Science Outreach programs over the Christmas holiday break.

As the world wrestles with a global pandemic, a study of tens of thousands of ancient skeletons has revealed how the human body evolves to fight disease, and how the diseases also evolve to become less deadly over time. Its conclusions could teach experts more about how we'll adapt to cope with diseases in the future.

Epistemology

Last week Associate Professor Duane Hamacher described the word “science” as being derived from the Latin word for knowledge, “scienta”, and he suggested that folklore and the scientific method are different pathways to truth.

This raises the question “How do we know that what we believe is true?”
