PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Rotary Environment Month "Crickets" is a term we often use to describe silence. And in many ways, that's what we hear these days when it comes to the environment: less noise, less urgency, less attention than the issue deserves. It was the absence of the sound of crickets and cicadas that stood out to me one evening in the middle of last summer. Where have all the insects gone? Also, where is the bird diversity that went with them?

Pattie Phillips is part of Prison Network, working in community and stakeholder engagement.

Pattie will be speaking about the work of Prison Network, the impact of that work, and why supporting women through and beyond the justice system is critical to building stronger communities.

CLUB SERVICE NEWS

BUNNINGS BBQ SUNDAY 31 MAY. I will be calling for volunteers to fill the roster between 9am - 5pm.

BUSINESS BREAKFAST FRIDAY 21 AUGUST. Mark Eldredge has taken the lead on this event as part of his membership drive. It will be held in the Stadium Room at Kooyong from 7.30 am - 9 am. The guest speaker will be Anshul Chopra, Enterprise Account Director at Microsoft, and his topic will be “Beyond the AI Hype: What Business Leaders Need to Know Now”.

“LIFT the LID – On the Pandemic” LUNCH FRIDAY 2 OCTOBER  This year, we have secured as guest speaker Professor Jodie McVernon, Director of Epidemiology at the Doherty Institute

We are once again taking part in the GWS COMMUNITY RAFFLE. Last year, we raised over $600 through the raffle.

PROJECT UPDATE 

Alma Doepel sails again

Andrew Crockett has provided the latest news on the restoration of the Alma Doepel:  “Members will be pleased to hear that the Club’s 2022 donation of $3,000 for the restoration of the youth training vessel Alma Doepel is bearing fruit, with the ship making her first voyage under sail since the restoration began“.

DID YOU KNOW

It was in President Dennis Shore’s year (2002-03) that on the eve of our Changeover Meeting, we were honoured to learn that RI President Bhichai Rattakul awarded our Club his PRESIDENTIAL CITATION for our achievements in meeting our goals in each of the Avenues of Service and for our support of The Rotary Foundation in his Rotary Year.

The Hepatitis B Matching Grant with Rotary Club of Bombay project to immunise 4,000 children in the city of Bombay against Hepatitis B was proven to be most successful.

As a result of the cheaper than expected purchase of vaccine, more children were immunised than originally intended. Useful publicity material was collected following Dennis’ personal visit to view the project in action.Dennis wrote in his Annual Report: 

“We did not set out particularly to win Awards but it is a nice outcome to all who have put in so much effort to “Make a Difference” through Rotary – so take a bow Hawthorn Rotarians!”
