President's Note

Happy to say last weeks meeting came off very well.   The historical walk around West Hawthorn lead by Elizabeth Love of the local historical society was extremely interesting.   The stories of the early residents brought up many names now reflected in various roads and parks in Boroondara.   All followed by a fine pub lunch with all the walkers, plus a few other members and friends, at the Elgin Hotel--itself quite an historical place.   It was a great  day for Rotary fellowship albeit a lot of the talk and banter was about cricket!

Hope everyone has enjoyed the Easter break remember there is no meeting (formal or informal) on Easter Tuesday so the next regular day back will be the 10th April.

Note also the joint (with Glenferrie) evening meeting on Tuesday April 17.

West Hawthorn Walk Meeting

Yet again our last lunch meeting was different.   So last Tuesday at about 11.30 many members and friends suitably attired in walking gear and hats many of dubious quality met at the corner of Woods and Denhamn streets just overlooking the Hawthorn Bridge at the intersection of Church and Burwood roads.   Guide was to be the president of the Hawthorn Historical Society Elizabeth Love.

Elizabeth was superb with some wonderful knowledge of the first days of the West Hawthorn community and fascinating photo images, maps and stories of that time.    Most intriguing was the comparison between those old images and the scene today.   One saw the banks of Yarra untouched, but with local vegetation and natural inclines. There were images of  the early settlers efforts to cross the river from the Melbourne side to Hawthorn with first a punt, then a wooden bridge.  It was hard to reconcile that against the backdrop today, with Melbourne skyscrapers providing the background to the present  bridge at the end of Bridge Road.

Stories of the lives of some key early residents added to the growing nostalgia in the minds of our members especially those of us who have spent most of their life time in Hawthorn and nearby.    In the course of the walk around the area some of us recalled past events about happenings and buildings with which they were involved.

Elizabeth noted this.   She asked to remind everyone to email her with their information, photos and stories of their houses and life in the early days of Hawthorn and its surrounds to her.  The local historical group is always interested to add to its knowledge  bank.

The Salvo Hawks.
They are back.  The Salvo Hawks, the local football team which Hawthorn Rotary helps sponsor with uniforms.
They need more, they need our presence at the games too.

DIK Post Easter Help

I hope everybody has a REALLY GOOD Easter break, because we need your enthusiasm for  WORKING BEE at DIK the following Saturday.

That’s Saturday 7th April, from 9.30 onwards.

It will be light work, mainly sorting out our boxes of donated goods.  When we moved house to Shed 39, we found we had around ten unsorted pallets stacked up on the shelves. Now we need to find out what they actually contain.

Please let me know if you can help.

The Shadow
The Shadow is a limited cricket fan.     Not so many of our members who were lamenting the outcome of the recent events in South Africa complete with rational(to them) excuses of the behavior of their heroes.

Lunch at the Elgin was a trial for those in earshot of our cricket buffs.    Still it was good to see David Rosback and Chris Hanson back in action and swapping stories of Epworth along the way.

The Shadow hankers for intelligent conversation in weeks to come and happily noted the flyer for the Camberwell Art Show in a couple of months . Alas he/she has also been reminded of the impact of the AFL season which kicked off over Easter.   No doubt the Fines Sergeants will exploit this in weeks to come and so maybe there is some positive around this sport.

Simulated Job Interviews at Auburn HS
Dates for the diary.  Wednesday 20 June and Wednesday 25 July.

Following the strong response by members to update and or obtain Working with Children Certificates the club is able to indicate to Auburn High School that as in previous years it can participate in that schools Simulated Job Interviews program.   Thank you to all.

We will require on each of the above mornings 9 am to 11.30 am about 20 willing interviewers to act as prospective employers.   Last year we had a few friends or family members who helped too,  of course we will tap into that pool again subject of course to their own WWC Certificates.   More detail to follow nearer the time.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
