PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE - Unite for Good

Last week offered a glimpse of the diverse life one experiences in Rotary—insightful ideas, community connections, collaborative service, and a moment to reflect on the passing and legacy of a distinguished Rotarian.

At Tuesday’s meeting, we welcomed Charlie Allen, former Peace Scholar and President of Sydney Rotary, who spoke compellingly about the relationship between stress and creative thinking. His message—that when we pause, breathe, and create space, our minds open to new possibilities—felt particularly timely. In a busy club like ours, where we juggle multiple projects, Charlie’s insights were both practical and encouraging.

On Wednesday morning, members attended the funeral of our former colleague and friend, PDG Bernie Walshe. Beyond his long Rotary service, Bernie was a pioneer in financial planning and the inaugural President of the Financial Planning Association of Australia. Above all, he was a family man, and we hold his loved ones in our thoughts as we honour his legacy.

That evening, I was honoured to represent the club at the Inaugural Awards Night at Auburn High School, celebrating the school’s continued growth and maturity. Traditions are forming that reinforce aspiration and achievement, and I was privileged to present two Work Experience Excellence Awards to students who approached their placements with initiative and enthusiasm. Auburn High is clearly developing a culture that enables young people to stretch themselves and thrive.

On Thursday, the City of Boroondara hosted its International Volunteers Day celebration, featuring Hindustani classical musicians and an engaging address from Kate Gneil, who shared her journey in volunteering and her work celebrating community contributors through her podcast. Her reflections reminded us of the quiet acts of generosity that hold our community together.

Finally, we continue to make progress on our joint SkyHydrant project. With Maffra, Yarrawonga–Mulwala, Beechworth, Lakes Entrance and Hawthorn working together, we are close to funding both the filtration unit and the necessary infrastructure for a village in Timor-Leste.

As we come together for our Christmas Dinner and complete our Strategic Plan, thank you for the contribution each of you makes to our club.

PP Anne Scott (1999-00) was a terrific, proactive President and during her year, Rotary Hawthorn’s International team successfully applied for a Matching Grant from Rotary International for a project in Zambia. This is still ongoing in our District.

This project ran over 2 years training 30 young orphans from the township of Mumbwa in skills in tailoring and raising chickens and basic business skills.  READ MORE
