This week was my first Tuesday lunch at Kooyong for three weeks; and it was good to find again the animated chatter and friendship that one reason that our club is so great. A second reason is that, as one would expect, whilst I was away, everything went on just fine!

I was very glad to welcome Rosalind McMorrow to our lunch. She will be Assistant Governor for the Riverside Cluster (Hawthorn, Glenferrie, Yarra Bend, and Kew) – filling Gabe Hau’s shoes - during the 2016-17 year.
One Page Planning is the approach to strategic progression which Warwick Cavell holds to strongly.
He gave us an address on that and how he is currently presenting the PETS and AG leadership training program in District 9800. A local with wonderful historic connections to Hawthorn Football (his family billeted seven of its 1961 premiership team) we learnt also he started as a CA but has concentrated on consulting in areas of strategy implementation and planning.
For many who have experienced corporate life where multi paged convoluted documents of business plans abound yet without much impact it was refreshing to see his three pillars synthesis.
First, there are two key input questions to focus on. Where are we now, and where do we want to be in a given time? In answering those two, one must keep any thought of “how” out of the way as it will stifle positivity and eventual plan implementing action.
Only when the objective and start point are clearly defined does one act or define the first step of a how. Feedback from the first action will be important to consider in subsequent steps, so implementation strategy must be dynamic.
Simple concepts but ones which promote action rather than planning for planning’s sake. An incisive and interesting address, thanks Warwick.
Our candidate Colette Mintz has been selected as the District 9800 Post Graduate Scholar for study next Rotary year.
The scholarship is for the amount of US$60,000 to undertake a post-graduate LLM at Columbia University in the USA with study commencing August 2016. The scholarship is an annual award by Rotary District 9800 and funded jointly by Rotary District 9800 and The Rotary Foundation and is for a one year study period.
Colette writes: “I am very grateful for the support I have received already from Rotary Hawthorn, which was extremely important in my success in the interview last night.” She plans to drop in to next Tuesday's meeting.
Of course, the "training team" (Ian Macfarlane, Ngaire Cannon, Henry Drury and myself) are also delighted with this result.
Coincidences can be cruel. But The Shadow admires those who ‘soldier on’ in the face of physical ailments. For example, Meredith Hayes who had a weakened voice and nonetheless served as both Sergeant and Chair of the Day. We hope you’re back to full volume soon!
The Shadow hears that Jane & Henry Drury are traveling in India, having flown there via Southern China. Let’s hope that, despite the curries and chopsticks, they return to us in good shape.
April is Rotarians at Work Month and Boroondara Rotarians (this year corodinated by the Yarra Bend club) has a program to spring clean the three Servants Homes-Carrical, Hamer Court and the Romana Centre. Work is light and will include cleaning floors and windows and maybe some gardening too. The properties will be allocated to particular Rotary Clubs.
So its all hands on deck for Saturday 16th April and we are invited to participate.
Sheridan Brown is our link man, so touch base with him about getting involved--its only one weekend away.
The clubs next BBQ fund raising opportunity comes on Sunday 24 April at Bunnings in Hawthorn. Long weekends bring out all those handymen getting last minutes hardware items and so we expect a bumper day to raise funds for our Charity Account.
As usual its a 9 to 5 presence and so we will need lots of volunteers to fill the various 2 hour slots. Friends and family are very welcome to take a stint and ease the load of our regular BBQers.
Sheridan Brown and Ian Macfarlane are keen to fill that roster sheet as early as possible and avoid that often present last minute stress which we seem to give our rostermen, please let them know soon if you can help.
Feedback from Auburn High School and its students to last years set of mock job interviews where our members interviewed prospective employees (being year 9 & 10 Auburn High School students) was very good. For all students it was a real "first" about getting a job. Despite the initial stress of the interview with some gruff(? ..no) Rotarians playing the employer role, all commented favorably.
So the one morning program is to be run again on 4 May at Auburn High School.
Again we will need about 20 interviewers for a two hour slot from about 8.45 to 10.45 am.
Geoff Wright (and David Owen) will be seeking to lock in some names so please help if you can.
Our club has a long term project connection to the remote Baguia region of East Timor with the "Friends of Baguia". Now we have a chance for some local support by having a table(or two) at the latter's fun fund raising Trivia evening.
