Chairman of the day Richard Logan introduced three members who told short stories of their past. This was a meeting structure inspired by a suggestion of Kevin Rose (who is on route to Jordan) who volunteered to talk of his first flight!
In Kevin's absence we were treated to stories of some early experiences of Dennis Shore, Brian Reid and Phil Stewart as carefree young men.
With the Statute of Limitations ensuring that the "hoonish" (a phrase attributed to the chairman's closing remarks) driving behavior of their youth could not imperil their current status it was fascinating in each case to hear of a first car and the exploration by each of that car's capacity. The young men of yesteryear obviously were fascinated as are todays with motor cars and speed. In seeking to guide the young of today the old catch cry "Do as I say not do" is still paramount. Still one audience member did reflect that there was very little traffic any how if those days.
Denis introduced his birch green VW or beetle, listing its price in "pounds" and extensive joy at first in driving in it but lamenting that a couple of near misses-one self induced but free from mishap, the other in which he was totally blameless but the victim of an errant driver who flipped a car and landed on top of his VW- changed his preference to the big sturdy V8 units which he drives to this day. The blow by blow story of those two events was chilling.
Brian Reid is a passionate car owner. He showed 10 successive images of the vehicles which he has owned and driven. These ranged from the first Austin 7 (1938 model) and included a massive unit purchased in Canada, shipped privately to Australia, and then converted to right hand drive. ("man has no greater love nor money than ....?"). Yet again we heard of, along with a dash board photo of a blurred road, a high speed experience doubtless on some special test facility road. "Still the fastest I’ve been in a car is in the back of an E Type at 150 mph (none of the whimpy kmh’s then) on a winding two lane road (with a centre lane for overtaking!"
Brian also told of his early accountancy training (he is an honorary life CA of the UK) and one drive holiday in Norway in 1932 Singer 9. At a time long before today's safety conscious environment he and his companions were happily able to walk the Nigardsbream Glacier admiring its crevasses and caves at close hand.
Phil Stewart life has revolved around motor vehicles starting from his days at Swinburne Tech when he resided next door to that institution at the family's panel beating business/home in Burwood road, Hawthorn. There was a great photo of the time 1958 of that business premises. He recounts that he survived youth and early driving experiences in his first vehicle a Vauxhall Victor. Like the two previous speakers he told of testing the speedometer dial of his car and indeed exceeding its limit downhill on a trip in rural Victoria. He laughed that his first and still only job is as a panel beater, albeit one notes management of the still intact but much expanded and now complex family business "StyleMaster" require a broad business acumen and skill.
A great trio, thanks. As President Lawrence said in wrapping up the meeting, our own members can match any address of a guest speaker.
The on site labor efforts of some diligent members of the club, and the financial support of Hawthorn Rotary were overtly acknowledged with the "Leader" press coverage at the opening on October 9 of the greenhouses at Romano Servants Community Housing in Kew. There was also coverage in the online Herald Sun. This is a great advertisement for Rotary and our club.
The ground work for these impressive and functional fabrications was done by our members in those busy Saturday mornings under foreman Sheridan Brown. The units were purchased by our club.

So said the early high school diary entry of a recent Rotary inductee, who thought on seeing that quote again that being a member of the great Rotarian family would provide a forum to pursue that ethos. So she joined.

The Shadow has learned that Kevin Rose is in Amman – presumably Amman, the capital of Jordan. We surely all hope that Kevin (and Jane?) return home safely; and tell us why they went to such a scary-sounding place!
The Shadow has also learned that Henry & Jane Drury returned home from Spain (splendid) Portugal (magnificent) and Morocco (horribly westernised) in the early hours of Tuesday after a 34 hour journey including – what joy! what rapture! – 17 hours in Dubai airport. (Apparently Qantas couldn’t start the plane’s engines!)
Henry awoke at 12.30; considered whether he should go to Rotary lunch starting in 30 minutes; and wisely decided to stay in bed a while longer.
President George Verginis of Kew Rotary Club (a cluster affiliate) was a guest at our recent meeting and told of a Big Greek Charity Dinner, a fundraising initiative , in combination with the Rotary Clubs of Athens to help provide urgent medical consumables for the benefit of the thousands of recent homeless refugees arriving in Greece.

'The Mosaic Man' WW1 Mosiac Project
Sankar Nadeson, known as the 'Mosaic Man' will speak on his four year project with Melbourne Legacy to create a mosaic marking World War 1. Described as an 'outstanding speaker who is absolutely fascinating', for the last 20 years Sankar has been involved in the fields of Community Engagement, Architecture, Interior Design and Curatorship.
Sankar has provided services to variety of clients and organisations, covering institutional, not-for-profit and commercial sectors, including: the MCG, National Sports Museum, Richmond Football Club, MCC, Commonwealth Games Federation, Villa Maria, Freemasons Victoria, Albert Park College, City of Port Phillip, Legacy and RSL Victoria.

Yarra Bend Rotary has initiated a number of awards to recognise members of Police, Ambulance, SES and fire services who do so much to contribute to the safety and wellbeing of our local communities.
Note change of Venue> The Boroondara Emergency Services Awards are now being held at the Hawthorn Town Hall, 360 Burwood Road Hawthron on Wednesday 28 October 2015, 7pm.
Designed to recognise members of our emergency services who exceed the normal demands of their employment and deliver “Service!Above!Self” to the benefit of the local community, the Awards are judged by a panel comprising senior officers of the emergency services and Yarra Bend Rotary officials.
The awards will be presented at a gala dinner by the relevant State Ministers and the Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner Mr Craig Lapsley. Members from neighboring Rotary clubs are invited to attend.

Invitations are extended to attend a movie night at the Balwyn Cinema, 231 Whitehorse Road, on Friday October 30.
The movie is The Dressmaker. It is set in Australia and was filmed in Victoria, starring Kate Winslet and an array of renowned Australian talent. Not sure if it has a happy ending but it is described as a bittersweet, comedy-drama about love, revenge and haute couture.
Costing $20 per ticket proceeds are in support of the Bulleen Heights School which is a Dept. of Education and Training specialist school for students with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder.

For those still contemplating counting, this year Super Sunday Count is being held on Sunday 8 November. It aims to collect data on the number of cyclists using or frequenting recreational trails, off road or major intersections. This data helps to build the case for better recreational infrastructure across our community.
Registrations are now open for potential counters. The count period is 9AM to 1PM.
Similar to last year, appropriate nomination of Rotary Hawthorn can see us gain the $120 (per site for a 4 hour counting stint) , if one successfully completes the count and submits the data to the central group.
If you think 4 hours is too long a stint, we can share it with fellow members and split the burden of enjoying the spring fresh air and sunshine.
One registers online, it's easy, one picks a spot and nominates the Rotary Club of Hawthorn as your preferred charity. Check with Gordon if you need help.
“To sleep, perchance to dream – what’s really happening during general anaesthesia?”
Professor Kate Leslie is a specialist anaesthetist and head of anaesthesia research at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Kate has done extensive research in awareness and dreaming during anaesthesia and sedation.
