The Epworth visit has come and gone and by all whispers was great.  Thank you David Rosback.  

Our next big event is the Tasmanian Student Exchange with Auburn High School in the week of 9-16 August.  Thanks Kevin Rose for coordinating--Kevin is still looking for souls who can partake in excursions with the Tasmanian students.

Excursion to Epworth Richmond Hospital

The meeting due for the week of July 21 was a pleasant diversion from the usual with an excursion to Epworth Hospital Richmond.  Admirably promoted and organized by David Rosback we were treated to a succession of highlights under the general governorship of Kathryn Johnston from the Epworth Medical Foundation.

First we armed ourselves with hard hats and flourescent jackets prior to an inspection of the partly constructed new Emergency Wing. Tramping about the incomplete building site, led by Bill the deputy director of the Emergency Department we gained an insight to the lay out and seamless design of internal ambulance bays, inspection cubicles, triage administration and ready access to treatment and diagnostic facilities.  There was sufficient tangible development (it is due to open on 1 February 2016) to complement Bill’s description to readily picture it in operation.  The advanced technology to be used was evident.  It had a “Star Trek” feel with a centralized module capable of providing at the finger tips that variety of diagnostic sub sets previously supplied by individual units brought in as needed.  The utilization of available space will be thus extremely efficient.   One could easily equate to the multi-multi million dollar budget.

In particular we saw the isolation room (to quarantine cases from the spread of special infections)  which had been part sponsored by Hawthorn Rotary—already there was simple template acknowledging that (see photo) and an obvious spot for any brass plaque which our club may arrange. 

Inside the hospital proper we were treated to a tour of the educational/clinical floor.  One sobering point for “us oldies” was the library—although there were some hard copy journals around all the monitors were occupied by staff researching the latest medical information online.

Adjacent to the library and various meeting/training rooms were mock operating theatres complete with life sized computer controlled dummy patients.  Those who have had first aid training may have worked on a simple dummy for CPR practice.  Extrapolate that thought to a $0.5 Million dummy which simulates all sorts of functions including responses to injected drugs!  “Alan” the dummy was computer controlled and could be set up to produce all sorts of problems to test the operating team under training. Another theatre was set up with reactive dummies to provide obstetrics training, yes there was also a “newly born” infant dummy to mimic various infant problems.   One way mirrors allowed the trainer at the controls of the driving computers to observe and film a medical team’s response to the created emergency.    

The excursion ended with a nice lunch of finger food and wine catered for by Epworth and finally the presentation by Vice President Henry Drury of a cheque for $5000 from our club to Kathryn as recipient for the Epworth Medical Foundation.  

Thanks Epworth for a great excursion and wonderful “eye-opener” to see how medicine today is embracing complex technology.    
 
Rotary Leadership Training

NEW Rotary Leadership Institute Program FOR DISTRICT 9800
FIRST METROPOLITAN COURSE starts Monday EVENING August 3rd, SOUTH MELB.
 
In response to repeated feedback over the past two years from Rotarians about having Rotary training programs on weekend days, the District 9800 Rotary Leadership Institute has developed a new evening program that focuses on much greater interaction and engagement to enhance the learning experience for all participants.
 
This outstanding program provides Rotarians with an extensive “overview” of what Rotary is all about, and is especially valuable for anyone who might be considering taking on a responsibility on any club committee.
 
Our experience is that not only newer but more experienced Rotarians learn from this program.
RLI has been a successful way for clubs to encourage members to learn more about “how Rotary works” and from the consistent feedback we receive, not only does it do that but the way the program engages people in the learning experience gets participants involved in their own learning in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere.
 
Then new program has been reduced in time so that the overall time commitment to attend the sessions has been reduced by 33%.
 
The 2015 program starts in three weeks. It involves attending four Monday night sessions at the Continuing Education Centre in Montague St, South Melbourne, with ample off-street parking.
 
The sessions kick off at 6pm for registration and then the learning starts at 6.30pm till 9.30 pm with a dinner break included.
 
Details about the program content and a registration form have been forwarded to your Club President. 
 
RLI also provides a great vehicle for Clubs to use for “succession planning” to encourage their future Club Leaders to attend and learn all about the mechanics of Rotary in a way that broadens their knowledge, enables them to meet and interact with other Rotarians whilst at the same time giving them ideas about how they can implement what they are and have learnt back in their clubs.
 
This program is highly regarded, facilitated by a very experienced and capable team and well worth attending.  Will we see you there?

Even distance shall not discourage him.   Yes, Gordon and Sheila Cheyne are still on holidays but Rotary is yet important.  From the wilds of Scotland we got contact.   Not a simple postcard but a full blown web link with photos.

No news.    Those climbing the stairs at Epworth had ready access to the Cardiac Ward but happily no-one took advantage of it.

 
 
Make ups and Apologies

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford  days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs.

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Recently with swollen numbers pursuant to a high profile speaker there were problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
