Environmental Month has prompted me to reflect on Hawthorn’s lack of visible contribution in this area. I also noticed the absence of an explicit reference to Environmental Sustainability in our Strategic Plan.
In the Plan, we speak of peace not simply as the absence of conflict, but as the presence of dignity, safety, fairness, stability and opportunity. Peace becomes difficult when people can’t rely on the land, water, air and the climate around them. Seen this way, environmental sustainability and peace building are not separate concerns. They are part of the same task.
This is the unknown story of the combat engineers who kept the continuation of World War I.
Although it has been repeatedly denied by the army, they were the first Australians and New Zealanders to land at Anzac Cove: in any combat, even today, sappers are always the first in and last out.

BUNNINGS BBQ SUNDAY 31 MAY. I will be calling for volunteers to fill the roster between 9am - 5pm.
BUSINESS BREAKFAST FRIDAY 21 AUGUST. Mark Eldredge has taken the lead on this event as part of his membership drive. It will be held in the Stadium Room at Kooyong from 7.30 am - 9 am. The guest speaker will be Anshul Chopra, Enterprise Account Director at Microsoft, and his topic will be “Beyond the AI Hype: What Business Leaders Need to Know Now”.
“LIFT the LID – On the Pandemic” LUNCH FRIDAY 2 OCTOBER This year, we have secured as guest speaker Professor Jodie McVernon, Director of Epidemiology at the Doherty Institute
We are once again taking part in the GWS COMMUNITY RAFFLE. Last year, we raised over $600 through the raffle.

SALVO HAWKS/WINDANA RETURN FOR 2026 – Big Mac
It was a very pleasant and sunny winter Melbourne day on Wednesday 15 April that greeted all players with the temperature reaching 16C. The event was the Collingwood Magpies versus Salvo Hawks / Windana for Round 1 at Victoria Park, Abbotsford. (Home of Collingwood Football Club)
Salvo Hawks have combined with Windana for the season due to decreasing numbers.
There were two very impressive Field Umpires with senior experience who controlled the game giving each player a chance to perform to their skill level with particular importance of involving the “not so skilled and the Female players”.

Without 3 or 4 of our members who provide regular news items, your editor is left searching social media for news items, which she needs to rewrite, get approval for photo publication and layout in a format that our wonderful Vincent does his magic in loading into ClubRunner every weekend without fail!
