We had a great, thought-provoking presentation by Ian Warren.  Thanks Ian.  We each look forward to receiving that – by email I presume.  Then let’s all let Ian know how much we appreciate his efforts by letting him know what we think.
 
Next week: a chance to learn more about that great Australian, John Monash – one of the very few generals to be knighted by the sovereign on the battle field.

Future Directions & Rotary Opportunity Centre

Ian Warren, current Hawthorn Rotary board member was speaker for the day.
 
His address was a summary of deliberations and feedback of members, and brainstorming from a survey initiated by Ian for the board last year.   Prompted by a decision to look at the future directions for Hawthorn Rotary we had been introduced to the concept of a Rotary Opportunity Centre—being considered as a possible headline project by which the club could be identified and focus its community activities .
 
Ian’s address covered a lot of ground.  He skillfully summarized the highly diverse inputs and views which the survey had uncovered, ranging from aspects of membership, eroding volunteerism, the changing society and especially the need to embrace social medium.   Ian noted that there is a tendency for such surveys to focus on the need for improvement, but as some pointed out Hawthorn Rotary is a great club, doing great work over a plethora of small projects-the status quoa is good subject to enhancing membership.
 
A common thought however was the need to match the resource capacity of the club (man power and funds) with its future  project ambitions.     
 
The perceived Rotary Opportunity Centre although in its broadest manifestation may be difficult  to achieve is very capable of being broken down into smaller select bits, e.g a few small scale units or teams  each with a separate project and self funding attributes.  
 
Partnerships with other community groups, and or utilization of specialist skills (eg IT data base stuff) from say Swinburne University  were canvassed in such things as a line Referral Data Base of available community aids, for the elderly , the sick, the disadvantaged, and new residents etc .    Again these could proceed on a modest scale.
 
All in all, the audience appreciated the great and stimulating address by which Ian catalogued a host of brainstormed output and comment  from members.
 
Observed audience reaction evidenced the difficult task of a next step.  With such a wealth of diverse thought universal consensus must be near impossible, rather a focused element of decision by the club (The Board ?) is probably now appropriate. 
 
 
Kooyong Car Parking & BBQ Mtg 4th Mar

The Davis Cup returns to Kooyong on the 4th 5th & 6th of  March.   Our car parking skills have been sought!    Clearly this needs some serious deep thinking (about the parking not the tennis? ) from the quartet above,  David, Ken, Noel and Sheridan. 
 
So our lunch meeting for the Tuesday 1 March is changed to a BBQ on the 4th at the car parking nerve centre opposite Kooyong Tennis Club.  
 
We will be seeking to fill the parking  roster for the above three days.   
 
It will be busy as "No Standing" will be signed in Glenferrie Road and Kooyong TC members will have no special privileges in the area which we will monitor.

Second Bite carries on Camberwell

Our Second Bite team commenced the food collection activity from the Camberwell Market last Saturday afternoon. Two full trolleys of food collected. Whilst waiting for the fishmongers to give some fish a lady came over and said what a great community service Second Bite provides - well done!

Trevor Jones can add 'media personality' to his c.v.  He was recently a guest on 96.5 Inner FM's  'Rotary In Action' program.

January was s Vocational Services month, so Trevor gave a very interesting account of his career in travel, as well as  tips, traps and trends for 2016.
 
 
Womens Day Breakfast 10 March

I am organising a table(s) for International Women's Day Breakfast on Thursday 10th March and I would like to take advantage of the early bird price if we book by 12th February 2016 ($590 per table of 10).
 
Please let me know if you are interested in attending, I almost have one full table already. I will book co-ordinate the booking of the table(s) for the event.
 
This is a popular event with over 1200 women and men attending last year. This event is a good opportunity to invite a family member or a  friend along.

2 hours of counting bikes?  Raises $50 for Rotary Hawthorn.  And does good for community planning.  The sooner you get on line to register, the more choice of counting venues you will have!
 
 
 
The Shadow Noted

Can eye conditions be infectious?  Did Bernie Walshe inherit his eye’s macular bleeding from President Lawrence’s macular hole?  Whatever the causes, The Shadow is glad to hear that both eye operations seem to have produced good results.
 
The Shadow hears that Ngaire Cannon has been marooned near the tip of the Mornington Peninsular by her faithful car becoming unfaithful and suffering a burst water pipe.  Couldn’t happen to a nicer person in a nicer place.  Let’s hope that Ngaire can charm the mechanic to prioritise the work on her car as effectively as she cajoles the members of our Rotary Hawthorn!

Remember Geoff Wright collates attendance information and he needs to be told of  "make up " events which we attend.

Tell Noel Halford days before of an inability to attend Tuesday.  Late or non apologies raise catering costs. 

Also please alert him to attending guests.   Unforeseen higher numbers make problems for a surprised chef in supplying all meals simultaneously.
