The Week Ahead

17 June 2025

What a fabulous Changeover Dinner! I was so proud of you all who attended and gave Ian and me your support as we ended the Rotary year and commenced a new Rotary year (1 July that is!).

We heard the most amazing singing from Karen Van Spall and our delightful DG Michael Lapina. It was quite emotional hearing their amazing voices.

Kooyong needs to be congratulated for the extra effort especially the dessert. There were empty, possibly licked plates on every table!

My quote for the week: Confucius say: “To err is human; to blame it on someone else shows management potential.”

President Ian and Jane Bentley, with President Dorothy.

Much laughter on the night!

Handing President Ian the newly created Incoming President’s Oar.

NEXT MEETING – 24 June – ZOOM

Ross Nancarrow - Every Daughter Matters, Rotary Action Group Against Slavery

Ross will talk about his life and journey finding faith through a tough start. We then follow his life as he enters ministry, and he will share Every Daughter Matters – a charity aimed at impacting the slavery of young women in Nepal.

DV SAFE PHONES - Your Old Phone Could Save a Life!

Jane Bentley and Dorothy met with Boroondara Council Executives last week and were delighted that Boroondara is endorsing our DV Safe Phone collections by placing three collection boxes around Boroondara.

We shall make fortnightly visits to collect these phones to send them to DV Safe Phones in Queensland where they will be professionally cleaned of content. They will then distributed by professional Family Violence organisations to victims of family abuse, to ensure their safety.

You can play a vital role in ensuring every call for help is heard.

Bring your old phone to a lunch meeting and Jane Bentley and I will ensure it is used to keep a victim safer.

IMPORTANT DATES:

1 July: Ari Talantis, Our Public Image and Website Chair.

Join us for an engaging and informative session as Ari presents an interesting, motivating and helpful talk so our club can make the most of our club’s website and social media presence.

Don't pass up this chance to gain knowledge from a social media enthusiast and leave with immediately useful information.

12 August - A visit to the Bionics Institute.

Special Message from Outgoing President Dorothy:

If you attended our Changeover Dinner, you are aware of President Ian’s clear message to Rotary Hawthorn, that we are expecting to lose members over the next few years due to many different personal reasons. This is happening in all Rotary Clubs.

This is a serious situation for any Club to find itself included in loss of members. So what are we going to do here at Hawthorn!

Are we going to accept that our membership may be halved over the next few years?  Are we going to wake ourselves from our lethargy of taking our membership for granted?

We all have interactions with people in our daily lives. From medicos to our favourite greengrocer. People you meet are all potential Rotarians. I have brought 4 members into our Club and have been a member for just 3 years.

I am very aware of reduction of membership and the dangers of this.  Toorak, Prahran were vibrant clubs and now are struggling to retain their Rotary status.

It is a creeping danger. I ask each and every one of you, please think outside of your Rotary meetings and consider your friends, acquaintances, family members as potential Rotarians.

Be on the Lookout for Potential Members (LPM!)

You can be an LPM!

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS - ARE YOU AVAILABLE?

  • Please note: Another care bag packing session is currently scheduled for 24 June 2025.
  • The Salvo Hawks are playing again and Big Mac is always on the “look out” for an extra pair of hands.

(Please note: If you would like some help with a Club project or event, you can post a notice in The Week Ahead and the Bulletin)
