The Club AGM this week was very well attended and our guest speaker Nicola Gatto provided a very informative video on deafness and hearing loss. The video highlighted how difficult it can be for people with a hearing impairment to participate fully in their family, work and school environments.
At the meeting, on behalf of the Club, I was pleased to accept an award from the Rotary Foundation for our financial support to the End Polio Now: Countdown to History Campaign presented by Dennis Shore.
Our guest speaker this week, Nicole Gatto, an experienced audiologist, shared a short film with the club members highlighting the complexity of the issues related to deafness and hearing impairment that often go unnoticed and are poorly managed by many in our community.
Deafness and hearing impairment encompass a spectrum of experiences that profoundly influence individuals across various stages of life. It can surface at birth or emerge later due to various factors. Understanding the challenges and experiences faced by those with hearing impairments sheds light on the importance of empathy, communication, and support in their lives.
This festive season, Rotary Hawthorn will continue our tradition of supporting those in the community who are less fortunate. Currently, we have 2 main focuses for which we are seeking member support.
Our friends at Camcare have advised that donations of food and groceries have dropped considerably during the course of the year, reducing Camcare’s normally robust supplies of emergency relief goods. (Apparently, most emergency relief providers are experiencing this).
The impact is so dire that Camcare has decided to concentrate on continuing to provide food staples and essentials rather than providing Christmas treats.
The request is for members to purchase a few extra items of non-perishables when they shop to support Camcare in providing emergency food relief.

A jester, court jester, fool or joker was a member of the household of a nobleman or a monarch employed to entertain guests during royal court. Jesters were also traveling performers who entertained common folk at fairs and town markets, and the discipline continues into the modern day, where jesters perform at historical-themed events.
