Rotary International's monthly theme for August is dedicated to Membership and New Club Development Month. This is a key time to reflect on the vitality of Rotary, welcome new members and strengthen diversity.
Recruitment is not just about numbers: it is also about finding motivated people, ready to act for the common good. It is also an opportunity to create new clubs, adapted to local realities and to rising generations.
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
I am now into my second month as President and I have been surprised by the turn of events which may be a path for us to follow for a successful year at Rotary Hawthorn.
Yes it includes membership but it also now includes our chance to make an impact with young people. Scotch College has unexpectedly reached out to us to charter an Interact Club and to have the Towards Respectful Relationships Program in Term 1 next year. Both programs have been approved by the Board at last week’s meeting.
We also have new projects to connect with more schools including Auburn High School and Auburn Primary School in our area. These were unplanned but the doorways have swung open for us providing these exciting new opportunities for us.
You may be aware that Rotary International views youth not just as the "leaders of tomorrow," but as active leaders today who possess the energy, creativity, and courage to drive immediate social change.

A favourite business that you use like a florist, Scicluna’s green grocer, a gym, pub, wine bar? Can they provide a gift voucher in return for us promoting them to 200 guests?
We need auction items:
· Sporting memorabilia
· Artwork
· A Holiday apartment or flights from your travel agency
· A unique experience (e.g. a drive in a sports car)
· Vintage wine

OPERATION UPLIFT
Members, I am ecstatic with the results of my campaign to collect bras for Fijian ladies. The results are astounding so far with Terry Kitchen’s request at Nicole Lingerie in Glenferrie Road, Malvern having to literally drag a huge bag of 100 bras down Glenferrie Road to her car.
I smiled reading an email from Jane Drury: “I've (and a couple of friends) left notices at several op shops and a lingerie shop and the op shops that only sell new bras and discard the used ones for recycling are the most enthusiastic. When I was giving a brochure and spiel to one, a nice lady beside me overheard and said she'd got several new bras she doesn't want and took my phone number and said she'd spread the word to her girlfriends too. The more people involved the better.”
Thank you to Pam Crockett who has the CWA gathering far and wide to add to our collection of bras which we plan to take to Rotary Portland in November.
Please keep up the good work and let’s show Portland how industrious and fantastic we are at Rotary Hawthorn!
DONATIONS IN KIND RELY ON ROTARY HAWTHORN ONCE A MONTH!
It is very disappointing to report that we had no one attend our regular monthly packing session at DIK last week. With John Perry away, we tried to get at least 2 members to DIK.
Thank you Geoff Wright who agreed but was the only member to put himself/herself forward. We are letting ourselves down by not respecting the promise we made to DIK to assist in packing just once a month on a Thursday morning.
Why can’t you sign up in advance so you have set the time aside well in advance, and it means John Perry is not left chasing people up at the last minute?
A canny, generous Scot, President Bill Brown (1973-74) gave much to Rotary and continued to work hard during the many financial ‘crashes’ of the 1980s and was in great demand as an arbitrator.
Bill and his wife Liba were effective in the hard to handle Vocational services area. With warmth and friendship, these good Scots worked with the committee to provide emergency lights for elderly people living alone, needy children to be kitted out in winter clothing through the Hawthorn Community Chest, tea for pensioners, planning for retirement and outings for members of the Over 60 Club.
