Cup Day
Nov 01, 2022
Melbourne Cup Day is Australia’s best known horse racing event. Since 1861 it has been held on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria. This event, popularly dubbed as “the race that stops the nation”, is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds and over, is said to be the richest ‘two-mile’ handicap in the world and is one of the richest turf races. More than 100,000 people usually attend Flemington Racecourse, and the race is televised live to an audience of about 650 million people worldwide'. Did you know? The 1875 winner, Wollomai, came from Phillip Island?, (which is located around 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne and is better known for its penguin colonies). In earlier days, prior to a ferry service between Phillip Island and San Remo, animals were swum across to the Narrows. It was thought that Wollomai had very little chance of winning, but jockey Bob Batty rode the horse to success, in a time of three minutes and thirty eight seconds, before a crowd of 70,000 people. The owner, John Cleeland, returned to Cape Woolomai with £22,000 pounds, having given the jockey and trainer £500 each. |

Identity Theft, Staying Safe From Online Scams And Other Cyber Crimes
Mar 28, 2023
|
|
Mar 28, 2023 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm
Via ZoomStaying safe from Scams, Cybercrime and Identity theftDarren Park - CEO, Pathfinders Consulting and TechnologyNote - Change of speaker but the same topic.
On a regular basis, we see media reports of malicious cyber incidents across the world. Although companies and government agencies are often targeted due to the value of their data or resources, individuals may also be subjected to attack. Recent intrusions into high-profile organisations demonstrate that such activity is relentless and can cause widespread damage and stress. The breaches at Optus and Medibank Private impacted 10 million and 3.9 million people, respectively.
Over the years, the methods employed by perpetrators have become more sophisticated. The old-fashioned scams to generate money have been eclipsed by newer (and often easier) methods, such as: loading malicious software, hacking email accounts and “phishing” with bogus emails, messages and calls.
This talk will be delivered by Darren Park, a Forensic accountant, Solicitor and Forensic technology consultant. He is founder and CEO of Pathfinders Consulting and Technology, a forensic firm that helps clients resolve a variety of legal and commercial challenges. He has over 25 years’ experience in the prevention, detection and investigation of fraud and other misconduct nationally and overseas.
Darren will share a number of practical insights into current and emerging cyber and identity theft dangers, plus provide practical steps on how to guard against them.

The Game Of Their Lives
Apr 18, 2023
In 1916, two teams of Australian soldiers put on an exhibition match of football in London. Most of them were gifted athletes who had put their football on hold to enlist. Six weeks after the match, the men were on the Western Front, some of them never to return home. This is the story of the footballers who became soldiers, the game they played and the fate they met amid the carnage of World War I. “In 1916 some of the country's finest Australian Rules footballers stepped onto the grounds of Queen's Club, in London, for an exhibition match. They were soldiers, and it was political football. Nick Richardson's engaging and extensively researched study puts the match in context, emphasising the convergence of sport and politics, and the extraordinary pressure put on elite players to enlist – to patriotically forsake the game for the greater game of war.’’ M.C. Our next Club meeting is on Tuesday 18 April at Kooyong. It will have an Anzac theme and our guest speaker, Nick Richardson, will tell us the story of the Australian Rules footballers who became soldiers, the exhibition game they played in London in 1916, and the fate they met on the battlefields of World War I. In keeping with the Anzac theme, we will raffle a copy of The Art Of Sacrifice by renowned Melbourne artist George Petrou OAM. George is a successful graphic designer and acclaimed portrait artist; he assists in supporting the interests and welfare of ex-servicemen and women, their families and dependents. In June 2020 George was awarded an OAM for 'Services to the Visual Arts and to Veterans', and in the same year he released The Art Of Sacrifice – a haunting and poignant exploration of a spirit like no other: the Anzac Spirit. George’s portraits proudly hang in museums in France, Government House Canberra, and a range of military institutions across Australia. |
