ZOOM Meeting For All, And When You Smile, Funny Tales from the Life of a Humorist
Aug 17, 2021
Kerry will take you through the laugh out loud stories of her life writing humour for newspapers, TV and radio, the absurdities of writing funny books, the surreal experiences of being interviewed on TV and radio and her insane role as the light relief speaker at serious but dull conferences around Australia.
Kerry Cue is an author (22 books), humorist, journalist (with columns published in every major Australian newspaper) and comic Maths blogger, Mathspig (1.5M hits). She spoke at the International Congress of Mathematical Education in Hamburg in 2016. Her book, TARGET 91, a suspense novel about American gun culture, was published by Penmore Press, Tucson, AZ in 2019. The Sunday Story Club (PanMacmillan), a non-fiction book, co-written with Doris Brett, was also published in 2019. Even Kerry thinks this is all a bit too much and wonders how it happened and where on earth 2020 went.

ZOOM Meeting For All, 100 Jobs Of The Future
Aug 31, 2021
Of interest to all, but will also be of interest to your family and friends. Invite them to Zoom in and listen! Join Professor Russell Tytler and Dr Peta White from Deakin University, to hear them discuss the exciting project: 100 Jobs For The Future. From space tourism operator to 100 year counsellor to cricket farmer (yum!), the job for the future will certainly look different. What are these jobs? How will people prepare for these jobs? What skills will be needed? ‘Tuesday 23 July saw the launch of the exciting 100 Jobs of the Future project through the website www.100jobsofthefuture.com. This project involved collaboration between academics at Deakin and Griffith University working in partnership with Ford Australia. The nature of work and Australia’s economy is changing – many of the jobs youth will do in the future, don’t even exist today. The 100 Jobs of the Future report predicts what these jobs could be, based on trends, new technology and demographic changes. The project has sharpened our sense of the key skills that will be important for work in the future, including digital, STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics), creative problem solving, and people skills. These have implications for STEM curricula, with a clear message that we need an increasing focus on critical and creative thinking skill development and continuous learning’. MC: TBA |

Melbourne Cup Day is Australia’s best known horse racing event. Since 1861 it has been held on the first Tuesday of November at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It is an annual public holiday in the state of Victoria. This event, popularly dubbed as “the race that stops the nation”, is a 3,200 metre race for three-year-olds and over, is said to be the richest ‘two-mile’ handicap in the world and is one of the richest turf races. More than 100,000 people usually attend Flemington Racecourse, and the race is televised live to an audience of about 650 million people worldwide'. Did you know? The 1875 winner, Wollomai, came from Phillip Island?, (which is located around 135 kilometres south-east of Melbourne and is better known for its penguin colonies). In earlier days, prior to a ferry service between Phillip Island and San Remo, animals were swum across to the Narrows. It was thought that Wollomai had very little chance of winning, but jockey Bob Batty rode the horse to success, in a time of three minutes and thirty eight seconds, before a crowd of 70,000 people. The owner, John Cleeland, returned to Cape Woolomai with £22,000 pounds, having given the jockey and trainer £500 each. |
