La Trobe's Jolimont - a walk around my garden
Mar 12, 2019
Most Victorians are unaware that our first Lieutenant-Governor, Charles Joseph La Trobe, developed a beautiful garden around his 12½ acre Jolimont estate during the nearly 15 years he spent in Victoria. The fate of La Trobe’s Cottage, after he left Victoria, will be revealed! Helen Botham has carried out research into garden history for the National Trust and the Australian Garden History Society. Being also a member of the La Trobe Society, and founding chair of the Friends of La Trobe’s Cottage, she has a particular interest in the garden La Trobe created at Jolimont. Her book, published in 2006, ‘La Trobe’s Jolimont – A Walk Around My Garden’ uses the illustrations of Edward La Trobe Bateman to give an insight into La Trobe’s Jolimont estate and the people who lived there. Mar 27, 2019 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
This month’s speaker is Lesley McCarthy from the Rotary Club of Flemington. Her topic, Rotary Overseas Playgrounds, is one which is a fine example of how Rotary Clubs can work together with community partners and engage with communities overseas who need support.
Our Local Councils have a policy of replacing their community playground equipment on a regular basis and rather than send the obsolete equipment to Landfill Rotary volunteers agree to retrieve it. Through the magnificent Rotary Donations in Kind Warehouse, we are able to harvest the playground equipment, refurbish it where needed and ship it to needy third world countries. This does require volunteers for many tasks in the process and is surely a great opportunity for interested people who may enjoy becoming involved with Rotary projects. We welcome all those who are interested in knowing more about Rotary and seek to become involved. It is a great opportunity for Rotarians to introduce their friends and family members who will see Rotary in action. If you could RSVP via the attached link (you have the option of paying Online as well or on the night) . Please RSVP by Monday 25th March 7pm for catering purposes Cost $15.00 or $10.00 for students to cover the cost of light refreshments. |

Mugshots 3
Apr 09, 2019
In the third book in the best-selling series, Mugshots 3 takes the reader inside the sinister world of Australian crime and reveals the truth behind the stories that shocked a nation. There have been gruesome murders, serial killings, terrorist plots, horrendous rapes and world record drug busts in Victoria during the 25 years since the Herald Sun was formed in 1990. Keith Moor has been an investigative journalist for almost 40 years — with more than 30 of them being with The Herald and the Herald Sun — and in Mugshots 3 he details 25 of some of the worst crimes committed in Victoria since the first copy of the Herald Sun rolled off the presses on October 8, 1990. Keith Moor is Insight Editor of the Herald Sun. He studied journalism at the West Australian Institute of Technology before starting a cadetship with the Perth Daily News in 1979. Keith won Australia’s top journalism award, the Walkley Award for news reporting, in 1986. He won the coveted award for his coverage of the kidnap of two Victorian aid workers in Pakistan. Keith travelled into war-torn Afghanistan to find the couple. He became the Herald Sun’s first Chief of Staff when the paper was formed in 1990, later progressing to become its News Editor and then Managing Editor (News) in 1995. Keith is the head of the Herald Sun’s investigative unit, having been appointed Insight Editor in November 1996. Chair: Noel McInnes |
