President's Note

Thanks to everyone that attended this weeks meeting. It was joy to host District Governor Peter Frueh and his wife Anne at our club lunch to hear his pearls of wisdom. I was also very proud to share with the members all our activities of the first three months of the Rotary year.

Next week is sure to be a fun and interesting meeting with Neil Cole talking on “Stability of the Mind”. Come along and wear your best or funny hat in honour of Australian Rotary Health’s Hat Day.
This Sunday morning we are joining Rotary Club of Kew in planting trees at Hays Paddock in Kew East .  We are meeting from 10.00am & will be followed by a casual BBQ.

We are hoping that we will gain some valuable insights ahead of our community tree planting day at Fritsch Holzer Park, Hawthorn East next year.

Also, please contact me if you able to billet students and/or teachers that are attending Swinburne Science Experience 4th to 7th December.

See you a Hays Paddock on Sunday morning or if not next week.

DG Peter Frueh pays a visit
A fine day and a good crowd of members greeted District Governor Peter Frueh and Anne for their official visit to the club.

DG Peter’s earlier informal chat with the board had been constructive and relaxed, and following lunch Peter was generous in his praise of Hawthorn Rotary and our accomplishments. In particular he mentioned Hawthorn’s five Past District Governors, three of whom are still active members. He also thanked several members who are active at District level, and the club for our support of Donations-in-Kind and The Rotary Foundation. He acknowledged our recent efforts to increase club membership.

Peter’s relaxed story-telling mode held our attention as he related how one Rotarian’s initiative had generated $300,000 worth of linen, when the fly-in-fly-out hostels in north-west WA were closed, and the donated goods were transferred to DIK in Perth and Footscray.
As a lead up to the District Conference in Warrnambool in March, he told us how a local chicken farmer, Swampy Marsh, suggested Maremma guardian dogs could be used to protect the endangered penguins on an island just off Warrnambool. Swampy had successfully used Maremmas to help protect his free range chickens. The penguins are now thriving.

Thanks DG Peter for a relaxed lunchtime chat: we look forward to seeing you at the District Conference next March.
On the air again
Rotary Hawthorn Club Service Director Noel Halford was a recent guest on the Rotary In Action program on 96.5 Inner FM.
Noel spoke on previous projects as well as promoting Rotary Hawthorn's next Thursday night meeting (19th October) and the 'Chances' Golf Day at Box Hill Golf Club on Monday 23rd October.
The Shadow
The Shadow is on holiday, but his resident-in-training gnome is working his fingers to a frazzle: when DOES David Owen get back?.

A cosy chat with the board in a side room at Kooyong Tennis Club: our photo shows DG Peter Frueh with President Katrina and President-Nominee Charlotte.
DG Peter had already gone over our planning guide, and he clearly had a good idea about the club’s history and activities. We also discussed possible changes to District and Club websites throughout Australia. Watch this space!

While the Rotarians chatted Rotary business, Lynda Shore and Anne Frueh had a coffee and a quiet chat: we never found out about what.

Footy all over for the year?  Probably not: lots of gossip yet to come.

Noel Halford got into the MCG for the Grand Final and got a good seat before six-o-clock. I thought the game would have been over by then . . . .

World Polio Day
How Rotary clubs are celebrating World Polio Day (24th October)
From red ponchos to pub crawls, Rotary clubs are coming up with a variety of ways to promote polio eradication in October. In eastern Ontario and western Quebec, Canada, thousands of Rotary members will put on red ponchos and march through the streets of their towns to raise awareness.
What should we do to celebrate?  Pub crawl?  Hmmmmm . . . .

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.

Rotary Hat Day: 'Stability In Mind'
Rotary Hat Day: 'Stability In Mind'

Neil Cole  is a playwright and author.  Previously he was a lawyer, a Melbourne City Councillor and a Member of the Victorian Parliament. After only five years in parliament he was diagnosed with bipolar mood disorder and put onto lithium. The revelation, the cathartic experience of this diagnosis changed his life forever.
