President's Note

Was offsite up North and disappointed at not being able to attend the Auburn High excursion and hear Manny Hendrix's address--my spies tell me it was superb and I suspect those many members who couldn't make it now share my disappointment.   Thanks to Jill and Noel for organising and Simon for stepping in last minute as chairman.

Back to Kooyong next Tuesday at the usual time.

See you then,
Katrina

Manny Hendrix Jnr  with HRC at Auburn High
Sport often has a unique capacity to provide a positive focus for youth.

Manny Hendrix Jnr  a high-rated US basketball player, Dunk Contest Champion, Coach, Mentor and Inspiration was guest speaker at a joint Auburn High School-Hawthorn Rotary occasion- in effect the clubs regular Tuesday lunch meeting this time chaired by Simon O'Donoghue.    A sandwich lunch which followed for HR members, Manny, his girl friend and manager provided for further but informal discussion.

Manny's basketball credits are numerous with scholarships to several  colleges in Arizona, and universities in Texas, Indiana and Utah and playing experiences against NBA names.   A few years back he came to Australia and has played for Southern Peninsula Basketball Association, the Western Port Basketball Association and is now with the Collingwood Basketball Association.

His Bachelors degree in Communication hints at but clearly is only a secondary driver to his inherent and wonderful capacity to relate to people, especially youth.

Manny is not just a top basketballer, he also puts back into the community.

Although humbly undersold in his address one learnt that he has :

·       run coaching clinics and mentored coaches,
·       Designed, recorded and edited an online TV series called “Manny’s Aussie Adventures”,
·       Organised and ran Aussie Hoops programs
·       Implemented marketing and sponsorship programs for local businesses
·       Started a reading/mentoring program at local schools to encourage students to read books.
·       Organised sponsorship and prizes, that have been recognised/ publicised by Big V League
.       Runs a homework club for kids from Collingwood

Manny's address was singularly aimed at demonstrating to the year 9 and 10 students (HRC members present were most happily swept along) how commitment and a positive approach can overcome roadblocks in life.   He told of some issues in the course of his own experiences at school, primary and secondary, and college.

There were some memorable but simple messages.   "Work hard" indeed out-work your opposition to gain an advantage, and so be prepared for any opportunity in life.  ( Manny's presence in Australia arose from a call at a time when an NBA basketball career was remote).    Try something, in fact dedicate ones self to an undertaking  for one year and "see what happens" is a message which he himself got from a mentor some years back and now advocates to others.

A responsive audience asked many questions, touching on Manny's personal training habits and even aspects of racism ( ignore ...learn to deal with distractions).

Thanks for a fine address, that's Manny in the middle with a couple of long past students.

Speakers Course at Swinburne
An important and satisfying, yet low cost club project undertaken by just a few of our number has received some external plaudits.

The team including Ngaire Cannon, Charlotte England, David Rush and Noel Halford have been passing on their  pubic speaking knowledge to a group of Swinburne students (usually second language English types) in a series of lessons/practice sessions at the university.

Full Fixture ....Salvo Hawks
As with all Aussie rules the season is close to finals time and closure and no more real exposure to eucalyptus aromas until next year.

However there is still the finals and end of season events.   Our project team Salvo Hawks  is in good shape and  these are the last dates to support them before next winter. And it would be really, really good if we were to muster a strong Rotary Hawthorn presence, especially at the Dinner and the Grand Final.  (Ginia and I will be on holiday and sadly we won’t be able to attend.)

Tuesday 29 August
6.30pm Presentation Dinner @ Firechief Pizza Restaurant, 169 Camberwell Road, Hawthorn East (Just NW of Camberwell Junction; Melway 45H12.) Approx. $20 per head.  Phone Rhan Harris (Salvo Hawks team manager) 0415 541 889 by, say, 2.30pm to let him know you’re planning to attend.

Wednesday 30 August
10.30 Grand Final – Salvo Hawks vs Odyssey (one of several matches over Wednesday & Thursday) – Peanut Farm Reserve, St Kilda (Corner Blessington St and Chaucer St, Melway58A11). All Rotarians and friends are encouraged to attend, admire the new Salvo Hawks jumpers (funded by Rotary Hawthorn) wear a Rotary hi-viz vest, spot the celebrities, enjoy the carnival atmosphere (everyone says it’s truly amazing), watch the local radio going to air, socialise with Salvo Hawks players and hangers on, and even socialise with other Rotarians!

The Shadow
The Shadow heard of  the meeting at Auburn High and the mingling of those HR members who attended with the hundred or so students who enjoyed the address by visiting American basketballer and all round good guy and youth mentor Manny Hendrix Jr.

Not sure who were more impacted the students or the HR members present.   The story that David Corrigan was seen in a one-on-one dribbling contest afterwards in the schoolyard was surely fake news?

Warm Socks Day 29 Aug
A couple of young Lauriston girls one being Maddie Bobeff ( grandfather and HR member is PP Geoff Dumayne) in year 3 set up a project on their own intitative to help support the people of Melbourne who are sleeping rough on the streets of Melbourne.    Joined with Year 12 student Lulu Morand their project has been embraced by their school.   Amazing that two such community minded students of different ages came up with a similar project initiative.   Well done to them.

The projects thrust is to create bags of supplies for these people.   Such a bag might contain clean socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, clean wipes, comb, sanitary items  deodorant and a blanket.   Each bag is envisaged to cost about $30 to assemble.

Our lunch time meeting of the 29th August will be the time at which HR members can bring such things or contribute some few dollars to the project for the acquisition of a bag.

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.

Seven Summits and Virgin On Insanity
Seven Summits and Virgin On Insanity

'I don’t feel as though I’ve ever had a job, but I’ve had several interests for which I’ve been fortunate enough to be paid: ski technician, Antarctic field assistant, Royal Marines Commando, high altitude mountain guide, rock climbing instructor, barista and founding director of the UK based mountaineering company, Jagged Globe. The toughest job I had was being unemployed.

When I could climb, I was passionate about sharing the mountains with others, and about my personal rock climbing which has fed my soul all my life. Now I’m passionate about sharing what I’ve learned to others, especially young people. When we’re gone, all we leave behind is the impression we’ve made on others, and young people stand to inherit the most'.
