Changing of the Guard....Left New President Katrina Flinn....Right Just Past President Meredith Hayes

Last Thursday 29th June, members, Rotarians other clubs, DG Neville John and Rebecca as well as member’s partners, friends and community partners attended Rotary Hawthorn’s 64th Leadership changeover dinner held at Greenacreas Golf Club in Kew.

It was a special evening, celebrating a year of achievement and the welcoming of the leaders for 2017/18.

President Meredith summarized activities of the year, which included the Christmas lunch for the socially isolated, mock interviews at Auburn High School. The Ronald Ryan Story ....Dr Mike Richards
Dr Mike Richards (PhD in Political Science) is a long term social campaigner and most notable for his part in the eventual repeal of capital punishment in Australia.  With an accomplished career in the media, academia and adviser to governments it was a  privilege for the club to have him as guest speaker.

His address centred around his extensive research into Australia's last hanged convicted criminal Ronald Ryan and the impact which that event has had since that day in 1967 on all of those directly and indirectly involved.    At the time it was a highly political event, only proceeding after the Victorian Government of the day chose not commute the death sentence.   This year was the 50th anniversary.

Expanding upon the material in his award winning book  The Hanged Man ..the life and death of Ronald Ryan, he related his observations gained from  interviews with, and research of  various players including the trial judge and counsels,  relatives of victims of the underlying crime,  government officials, media reps and witnesses to the execution.    There was a common theme of a traumatic aftermath and questioning re the role of capital punishment.

The address was a catalyst to  open up vibrant discussion on some  related issues today namely about the merits of different punishments and deterrents for modern day atrocious crimes (e.g. terror driven massacres).    Topically the aspects of granting bail and parole were broached too.

Mike explained how capital punishment has become less prominent in Western cultures in recent years  but still persisted in other regions especially Asia.   His long term view was that generally it will decline.

The Shadow
44 Years a Rotarian.    The Shadow applauds Gordon Cheyne for being both Hawthorn's just past Rotarian of the Year and celebrating that milestone.

The Shadow got to wondering of how one copes with that lapse of time and remains so effective in Rotary.   Even now Gordon is regularly at DIK in Footscary climbing ladders and sorting out goods for categorisation into containers for delivery to people in need in far off places.  ( By the way he is always looking for helpers so let him know...).
The Shadow thinks its the Samson like hair, just look at the before and after images.

Temporary Editor Needed
Our editor will be unable to process issues of the RCH Bulletin for the period which covers meetings starting 5 September to 10 October and is seeking an interim substitute.

Still looking for some help, thanks.
Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
