President's Pen
Sorry I could not make the last meeting(in Canberra preparing for relocation) but delighted to hear that President elect Katrina Flinn had a fine first meeting.

Reports from Kew's 50th celebration were great.   The stories of the contributions by various Rotarians over the 50 years reminds me of what Rotary is about and how much satisfaction one can get by being involved.

Looking forward to the changeover evening on the 29th, hope to see you all then.

Fellowship Day & Project Advice
The last meeting for the Rotary year saw incoming president Katrina Flinn sit in for President Meredith Hayes.   Taking advantage of the informality which results on those times when we do not have a rostered address fellowship abounded over a good meal.

Katrina recounted some recent outcomes of the club.  It contributed $2000 to Australia Rotary Health, $5000 to Foundation (making a total of $20,000 for the year courtesy on an increase in our Paul Harris Society members to 8).  The next Board meeting will promulgate a Standard Project Evaluation Process for the club as a way of improving project selection.

Ngaire Cannon outlined plans for "Community" next year and forthcoming special days and projects.   Mental Health issues and Trachoma elimination were cited, as was the proposal to implement a "Taste of Harmony" day in Boorondara (more to come).

David Rush told of a project to build/finance in part sanitation units in a remote village in the Philippines.

Lawrence Reddaway highlighted our involvement with the "Salvo Hawks" footy team asking members when possible to simply support them by attending the Wednesday matches at the Victoria St oval in Auburn.

Without exception all these prospects drew concerted interest from members and a highly positive mood for next year.

HRC Members at Kew Rotary's 50th

The Rotary Club of Kew's 50th Year Celebration was a great party.  It was a format worthy of copying by any other club celebrating a key anniversary.  Upwards of 20 Hawthorn Rotarians were there in a total turn up of over 100.     MC Murray Chessell a past Kew president in 1980 conducted the proceedings.  It moved along in a very relaxed way to the enjoyment of all.   Here's an element of apt summary from Kew RC.

"President Bob Slater welcomed  members, their guests, past members and special guests from District 9800, other Clubs and most importantly, members from our sponsor Club Hawthorn.

District Governor Neville John proposed the Toast to Rotary and in doing so paid tribute to, and acknowledged the contribution our Club has made locally, nationally and internationally helping make the lives of other so much richer."

Aside from the presence of District reps DG Neville John and AG Ros McMorrow there was a host of past Kew office holders from way back.  All were introduced to the audience with occasional awards given in the course of the proceedings, and through it all the party atmosphere prevailed. Links back to charter members in 1967 kept everyone aware of the history and various projects which the club had been involved with.

Of particular note to us was the special award to Jill Forsyth (from Kew RC) with whom our own club has had much recent interaction.

The Shadow
The Shadow understands that in some States there is compulsory testing for driver licence renewal for the elderly, but not in Victoria.... Maybe wrong?  Imagine, one our of most highly decorated members backing their car into a parked Ferrari!  The Shadow guesses that as a Melbourne supporter with his head in the clouds after a good win and seated high in a 4 wheel tractor one can easily overlook low slung vehicles.

Night at the Basin Theatre Group
Some if (at  least perhaps the most dramatic) of the club's live theatre lovers were seen at the recent Basin Theatre Groups presentation of "Forget me Knot".   Organised by LeLe Tran who was present with a friend, notable attendees included Kevin & Jane Rose,  Ralph Treloar & Ngaire,  Noel & Marjorie Halford, Owen & Jill Weeks.

The show was great and done with all the skill and impact of any highly professional unit.   Certainly highlights the fact that there is bevy of artistic skills in the community and a tough call for these talents to get to the top.

Number Seventeen?
Seventeen is a Prime Number.  What else?

Story is that it is central to some club pursuits and goals in the year 2017-2018.

Watch this space to see these ambitious objectives.
Temporary Sub- Editor Opportunity
Being the editor of a weekly news bulletin can lead to great opportunities....many of the News Corp group doubtless including various CEO's started this way.

Our own editor will be unable to develop issues of the RCH Bulletin for the period which covers meetings starting 5 September to 10 October and is seeking an interim substitute.

Any interest please?
Half a Minute ...from the Board
Half-a-minute

You may wonder what goes on at Rotary Club board meetings, and for that reason the minutes are made available to all members. The minutes include all decisions made, and up-to-date financial transactions are there too.

Just go to the Club’s website and log in to the Member Area. Under “My ClubRunner” you will see “View Club Documents”, and you can roam through them to your heart’s delight.

Half-a-minute? It may take a little longer, but have fun in any case.  If you have lost your password, just ask.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
