President's Note

For me it was a an enjoyable and inspiring  weekend at the District Conference at Warrnambool.   Those Hawthorn members who attended were of the same mind, and although the drive back Sunday around the bush fire zone was readily negotiated it sobered one's mind.  Some of the more observant of us noted the huge glow in the Eastern sky at about 11pm Saturday on leaving the Conference dinner.

After all that intensity Tuesday's meeting was back to the norm, where speaker Paul Devereux  from StartMesh opened our minds to the rapidly changing nature of the business world and possible impacts on society.

Remember next Tuesday is NOT at Kooyong but involves a historical walk about, starting off at the corner of Denham & Wood  street in Hawthorn at 11.45.

Then again no meeting (formal or informal) on Easter Tuesday so the next regular day back will be the 10th April.

See many of you at the Walk

Katrina

Transition from Entrepreneur ...Paul Deveruex

Last speaker was Paul Devereux  CFO at the new and growing international organization SmartMesh.
Paul set the scene of the thrust of this company by presenting the simple statistic that over the past several decades, start up businesses predicated on the venture capital model and subsequent growth have had a success/survival rate of only 14%!

Why?   Various reasons according to Paul but broadly categorized under tags such as executional failure, lack of transparency and poor liquidity.

There are many examples where validated ideas have just not brought "fruit" in getting to that stage of a sustainable mature business.

Whereas the systems on which SmartMesh prospers could only be described in general terms Paul brought the audience right up with their impacts with his example about the prospects for different transport methods in say even 10 years.  His question was"why have an asset which is not utlised 80%+ of the time--(the householder car)" . One extrapolation of this fact and technology advances raises a concept that electric car and vehicle  sharing will likely proliferate in the future.   This means many new businesses starting off.

SmartMesh is targeting to help entrepreneurs in all and any future field, perhaps some transport focused ones like the latter example implies,  develop by offering its expert advice, technology and services.

DIK Post Easter Help

I hope everybody has a REALLY GOOD Easter break, because we need your enthusiasm for  WORKING BEE at DIK the following Saturday.

That’s Saturday 7th April, from 9.30 onwards.

It will be light work, mainly sorting out our boxes of donated goods.  When we moved house to Shed 39, we found we had around ten unsorted pallets stacked up on the shelves. Now we need to find out what they actually contain.

Please let me know if you can help.

Gordon

The Shadow

The Shadow understands that some members while at the Conference braved the early morning at Warrnambool beach to watch some racehorses exercise.   One hopes that their brave venture gave appropriate reward.   Yet again The Shadow was fascinated by Pres Katrina's remarks that only some saw the huge fireball in the East on leaving the Conference dinner.   Did those who did not suffer from shortsightedness or was it too much fellowship?   The Shadow will be tightlipped about names on all fronts!

Wonderful to see the softly spoken Joe Devereux back at last weeks meeting albeit supposedly to check on son and speaker Paul.  The Shadow applauds Joe's long term and ongoing commitment  to Rotary.

Simulated Job Interviews at Auburn HS
Dates for the diary.  Wednesday 20 June and Wednesday 25 July.

Following the strong response by members to update and or obtain Working with Children Certificates the club is able to indicate to Auburn High School that as in previous years it can participate in that schools Simulated Job Interviews program.   Thank you to all.

We will require on each of the above mornings 9 am to 11.30 am about 20 willing interviewers to act as prospective employers.   Last year we had a few friends or family members who helped too,  of course we will tap into that pool again subject of course to their own WWC Certificates.   More detail to follow nearer the time.

Future Date Camberwell Art Show
Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
