President's Note

We are into the new year with changes to images and contact points now well entrenched.  It doesn't take long.    Pleasing to have the Art Show away day so well attended--thanks to Jill Weeks.      These off site days/meetings are always popular particularly with member partners and the Board is planning for others soon.

Next Tuesday back at Kooyong for a "fellowship day" and opportunity to cover some issues and plans.

See you then
Katrina

At the Camberwell Art Show

The excursion to the Camberwell Art Show at Swinburne University was a great success.   (Recall this project was gifted to Camberwell Rotary by our club years ago to start it off).   It has grown each year.

Arriving at 12.30 our presence was first ticked off by Jill Weeks who organised the excursion.  Then we passed through to the registration desk and then immediately conducted to the wine desk where after a choice of a "red" or "white' plus voucher for a refill proceeded to the cafe for a nice choice of finger foods and coffee.

Having sustained ourselves we proceeded to an introductory address on aspects of the art on display and then ventured around the display armed with this background knowledge.  The art works on display was highly varied in subject and technique, always interesting and to this lay artist exceptionally good.

Our photographer Gordon Cheyne was there and has populated this site with his shots.

Supporting SalvoHawks
We’ve only been officially supporting the Salvo Hawks for a few weeks, but we’ve already found exciting new potential ways for Hawthorn Rotarians to contribute to the really good social results that Salvo Hawks are regularly achieving.

This project is principally about friendship:  We attend the matches and the training sessions, and we talk with players and the hangers-on.  Each player and hanger-on has their own story of social confusion, and the general refrain is “without Salvo Hawks, I can’t think where I/he/she would be”.  By chatting, we can help, in some tiny way, to confirm these positives.

But we need a concerted effort for much more participation by Hawthorn Rotarians.  On days when there’s a home game (2 and 16 August), we need several of us to be there.  Not necessarily from start time (noon) right through to pizza finish time (1.50pm).  But some of that time.  And the same on training days (26 July and 9 August).

As we develop a cohort of Rotary Hawthorn supporters, so that we can be reasonably sure of having at least two attending at each home game, then we will explore other possible support mechanisms, such as
  • Dealing with the massive pizza order;
  • Providing the cut-up oranges at half time; and removing the skins
  • Operating the electronic scoreboard (currently there’s no working scoreboard!)

When I attend, I wear my Rotary Hawthorn name badge and a Rotary Hawthorn Hi-Viz vest, in order to facilitate the starting of conversations, and to raise our ‘brand image’.  Soon the club’s new jumpers will arrive, funded by us and featuring our logo.

And as our presence becomes established, there is the potential for one or two of the players to speak at a Tuesday lunch and tell us their stories.  Now those addresses could be great eye-openers!

But first, can we all please try to attend on (especially) game days and (also) training days.  Please put the dates in your diaries.  And see whether you can adjust your diary to enable you to attend!

19th July - Salvo Hawks vs Malmsbury - away game
26th July - training
2nd August - Salvo Hawks vs Warriors - home game
9th August - training
16th August - Salvo Hawks vs Wynbay - home game

Wednesday 30 or Thursday 31 August Grand Finals Tournament – details soon.

Working with Children...Club Needs
Members & Partners

We are now recording the currency of Working with Children accreditations for all club members.

If you haven't done so already, please apply for a Working With Children Check and nominate the Rotary Club of Hawthorn as your 'employing' organisation.

Details of the process, which is quite straightforward, are set out on the Victorian Government website: www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au

This is very important for the Club to be able to support our various youth programs .  WWC cards are  required to comply with Victorian Government Legislation, District 9800 and club policy.

Once you have your WCC card if you could bring it with you to a Club lunch so it can be photocopied and the details recorded in Clubrunner.

The Shadow
The Shadow enjoyed the doings at the Camberwell Art Show excursion and of the wonderful contributions from many talented artists but above all the Rotarians.

First all was the learned repartee of a couple noting that those exhibits which were more striking were in-evidently already sold but also had that "special difference".   The Shadow wondered what came first the "sale note" or our learned couples assessment...perhaps our club does have some hidden fine arts devotees.

An interaction with the coffee shop at Swinburne again highlighted our club members underlying "savoir faire".  David and Leanne Tran were the ultimate hosts at the Swinburne cafe. (Thank you).  No coffee request is too difficult ...even when a visiting Rotarian requests a macchiato coffee and...in a glass 'please' !!

Members Details...update Club Runner

Are your member details correct? And how do I access mine or other member details?

The printed version of the club handbook which was updated last year & will not be  be produced this year (mostly as there was very little change to last year’s details).

Members details can be readily accessed by
1.. Club runner (member area of www.hawthornrotary.org.au)
  • Yes, you can update your own details in Clubrunner, or if not let Gordon know of any changes. Clubrunner access is also required to access club documents and forms plus this is where the  board minutes are stored for access by all members
  • For readily printable member list go to member area/reports/edirectory reports/rotary club of hawthorn-basic list (this list should be the very latest!), and
2.  Clubrunner smartphone app
This app has members details as well as club events, you can phone a member directly from the app.
(You will need your login which is the same as Clubrunner but once only), and

3. Katrina will bring some paper copies of the Basic member list to meetings which will be updated as required.

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
