President's Note

Time goes quickly that was our last formal lunch meeting for 2017.  Thanks to all for the support over the first six months.

Fascinating to hear from guest speaker Suzanne Dunlop on the changing emphasis of the Neighborhood Watch program over the years .   Good to note the  current day efforts of  Suzanne and team in adapting the program to Boroondara today.

There is still a lot on the agenda for the next few weeks and many roster spots to fill.  Please check the list below on the detail.

See you at the end of year party next Tuesday evening at Kooyong.

Neighborhood Watch  in 2017...Suzanne Dunlop

Many of our older members of Hawthorn Rotary remember the days when Neighborhood Watch kicked off in the 1980’s.  As guest speaker Suzanne Dunlop recounted we had many overt displays of its presence with little placards attached to fence posts in each house, regular drops of one or two-page bulletins of happenings and security concerns in our street and widespread volunteer involvement at meetings.

It worked well and created an awareness which holds today especially for the older generation for monitoring threatening activities in our street and neighbor’s home.

Suzanne described how Neighborhood Watch has changed.  She noted that the number of volunteers had dropped, external funding sources reduced, the means by which knowledge of local crime statistics could be spread changed, and the street by street unit concept expanded to a regional one.  For instance, current social concerns re privacy and harassment perhaps contradicted “Safe house” displays.    Some revitalization was needed.

Suzanne is now chair of the Boroondara wide unit and with her small team described how Neighborhood Watch is now working.    She echoed many of the points raised by a recent police guest speaker on simple home security measures (i.e. lock doors/windows and keep keys hidden) and the importance of simply being aware and reporting concerns to the police.  Suzanne told of the unit’s ongoing good relationship with local police.   Publicity campaigns at local festivals and pamphlet drops by volunteers are being pursued to remind Boroondara residents of the still active program and attract or alert younger generations to it.

Car Parking Jan 9 -12 Tues to Friday

       We Need You!!

The Kooyong Classic is on again from Tuesday 9th January until Friday 12th January and we need members (& friends, family) to assist by volunteering for a shift parking cars.

Why do we park cars? Parking cars for the Kooyong Classic is one of our very important fundraising events. The funds raised are used to fund our various programs including programs supporting our local community (such as the Christmas lunch for the socially isolated) as well as international projects, including Donations in Kind & scholarships for students in Timor Leste to name just a couple.

If at all possible, if you could assist us, by putting your name down to volunteer for a shift or two.

The following is a link to the roster (copy the link into your Internet browser). You can put your name directly into the spreadsheet for your preferred day & time or if you prefer mail us with the shift that you would prefer.

A big thank to the 4 members that have agreed to be Day Captain (one for each day) & to the member that have already out their name down for a shift.

We also need a member to take on the important responsibility for the completion of the roster.  If you can assist please let Katrina or Noel know.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or phone either myself or Noel Halford (0419 018 901)

Feel free to invite family & friends.   Please support this important fundraising event!

The Shadow
Was that a new member?  There was the gent with the intellectual looking goatee and moustache.  Alas no just Chris Hanson bravely showing off his new facial hair style.   The Shadow wonders how long it will last and does spouse Dubravka approve?

Sergeant Noel Halford acknowledged that for the first time in his illustrious Rotary career he had that role. The Shadow congratulates Noel on that wonderful career (he is tirelessly working to manage our big Christmas event for the socially isolated)and moreover for catching out cricket buff David Rush  on his lack of knowledge of the England-Australia test match in December 1928.  Likely because supposedly England won by 600+ runs our buff had cleared his memory cells---another politician in the making?

The Shadow is delighted that the footy season is over yet despite that it lingers.   The AFL had a recent draft(what's that) to distract from the cricket and The Shadow was reminded of our clubs link with the Salvo Hawks--remember we are in part sponsoring it --by this recent photo.

Is that not two of our club kind, local State member John Pesutto and Lawrence Reddaway getting  press coverage in the local paper?

Make-ups and Apologies

Lawrence Reddaway always seeks to finalize numbers by Sunday 10pm by collating  responses to attendance at the next meeting.   So please try the electronic response (or phone) or even carrier pidgeon!    Forewarn of any guests at the same time.   This minimizes catering costs.

Geoff Wright collates the attendance information.  He needs to know of  "make up " events.
