World of Difference.   Guest speaker Rithy Ann gave an insightful
talk about Rural Cambodia, stimulating our interest in knowing more
about his country. Several members recalled meeting him at the Albury
Conference. Rithy was originally a tour guide, but has been awarded a Royce
Abbey Scholarship to study biological fuel production.

Bronwyn Stephens accompanied Rithy, and was able to tell us about World of Difference
Humanitarian Travel.

Rotarians at Work at Romana House
Glenferrie are showing us up at Romana, outnumbering us by four to one.
Nevertheless, the tiling work is virtually complete, which means we now need
to focus on getting Romana ready for its new residents. That will require a
good deal of spring cleaning and a general clean-up all round. Plenty of work
for everyone as the first residents are due in by the end of April.

See item below for the next lot of dates.  If you available to help, please come on which ever days you can.
Thanks to all who have helped to date.

Presidential Citation: I had hoped that the Club would be eligible this
year for a Presidential Citation. However DG Ross Butterworth informs us that
we have not been able to gain the net one member required by 1st March
2014 in order to receive the award. This is the one mandatory requirement for
the Presidential Citation and is not open to variation.
DG Ross continues: The good work the Club does in other areas of
service is excellent and I congratulate the Club on the work you do.
So there we are: more work required on recruitment, boys and girls. I’m sure
we all know someone suitable for membership. You all know a dentist, or
another professional or businessman in the area. Just ASK SOMEBODY!

Enjoy the school hols, but remember to tell Noel Halford if you will
be away. We will have a fellowship lunch on “Easter Tuesday”.

Finally, great news below about Victoria Hammond, our Global
Grant Nominee.

Gordon Cheyne

Noel Halford prefaced his introduction to the two speakers from "the World of Difference" on the interaction of Rotary and like organisations in cooperative projects with the disadvantaged regions in Asia, and of course Cambodia has special needs.

We heard that in Cambodia 85% of the population are uneducated farmers. During the 1975-1979 Pol Pot regime educated people were killed or starved.  In 2013 70% of the population is under 30 years of age, and still there is a lack of 40-60 year olds.  More than one third of Cambodians live below the poverty line, struggling to survive on less than $1 a day. Poverty is especially pervasive in rural areas and among children, who constitute more than half of the country’s population.

First, we were briefly introduced to Bronwyn Stevens (Project Chair for WOD) from Rotary District 9800.

World of Difference is a District 9800 endorsed project that powerfully portrays the work of Rotary in developing countries.  Organised by the Rotary Club of Melbourne South, participants are invited to join the group on an tour of regions within developing countries such as Cambodia that require support from Rotary and other volunteers that would like to join the program.

The tour visits well resourced and well run Rotary supported projects.  This contrasts with villages and schools in need of Rotary support. During visits it provides donations and volunteering.  Each tour builds on the last to provide on going dental hygiene checks, English, knitting and craft classes.

Bronwyn then handed over to the Cambodian national, and a guide for the World of Difference tours, Mr Rithy Ann.

Rithy highlighted the contrasts in his country, the beauty of ancient temples(over 1000) of which Angkor Watt is the most iconic, and the poverty in rural villages. Most impacted are the children of villages which have no clean water, little food and no services. Educational levels and missing generations of teachers means that learning and self help actions are difficult without external support.

Rithy gave us a bleak but yet hopeful story of village life and how small cost projects for example the World of Difference tours with their significant element of humanitarian effort and hands on aid complement the value of very modest donations in providing for example school implements, pieces of infrastructure (e.g.  bores, water filters, basic school halls) and food both consumable and regenerative in nature.

The Romana centre in A'Beckett St, Kew is still in need of able bodied support from local volunteers.  Just drop in for a couple of hours, you will be welcome.

RCH members have stories to tell of their efforts so much so that it has become a silent badge of honor and or opportunity to have a picture--overheard two at lunch discussing their efforts in cleaning tiles.    "Two hours was all I could take",  "There were 800 tiles in each bathroom and several of those", "my golf swing was off next day"  ...oh the pain borne for Rotary and the community.

Here is a formal invitation to all at RCH:-

April is Rotarians at Work Month

Four “shifts” to go. Won’t you join us at Romana?

The old tiles are down, the bathrooms are prepared for their new tiles. The hard work is mostly behind us.
Now it’s time for the final clean up and gardening. Just four more sessions will see it finished. We need some more hands. Won’t you join us?
The work is unskilled and is not onerous. And of course fellowship is a big winner. These are the remaining work days and times.

We now hope she is successful at the District interview to gain a Rotary Foundation grant for her course.

In Rotary there are regular meeting attendance goals for each member.  On Tuesdays the front desk does more than take our money it records our presence for this purpose.

Also a member can undertake other Rotarian activities (maybe visit another club or spend time at some project outing) which actually can be recognised hence the phrase "Make Up".

Norman Hall collates all this information (when he is given it) to build up an attendance record of a member.  Clever as he is he cannot know of all non-meeting efforts of members so invites us to let him know of these "make up " events which we attend.

Matches in with the task of forewarning Noel Halford of an in ability to attend Tuesday ----  there the  catering estimates are important,   a last minute oversupply can at times cost the club.

No News.
