Tibetan Village Project Australia Inc.
Jun 17, 2014
Don Cullen Tibetan Village Project Australia Inc. (TVPA) is a not for profit, non political, non religious organisation established in early 2005 by Don Cullen after he had travelled to Tibet for a number of years enjoying mountaineering & high altitude trekking plus working with local Tibetans. Don, a corporate executive, felt he could help the local people to regain their dignity by using his corporate experience to make their lives better by creating opportunities. Under the banner of TVPA he set out helping to establish Medical Clinics, Orphanages, Educational facilities and Green Houses. It soon became apparent that by helping the Tibetans help themselves, a number of these projects, in a very short period of time became self sufficient.
Don has worked full time in his charity for the past nine years. The organisation is endorsed by Southern Region and Rotary Australia Worldwide Community Services, RAWCS, giving full tax deductibility to recipients. Don also takes small groups each trip to visit the projects.
The photo?
The photo is of a lady called Yalla and her daughter Lhamo. She had just lost her husband when i met her in an accident. She was destitute, so Don bought her a horse. She rents out the horse for a regular income. That was six years ago and he sees her every trip, she still has the horse and because of her success, he started The Little Horse Project wherethe group breed horses to give to the poor to duplicate what she has done. That's just one of our projects and stories!!'

Jeff Patchell launched Connection Magazines in 1985, which today is based at Mt Waverley, employs 15 staff and remains a family-owned SME. Over a number of years Jeff and his team developed a series of Business to Business (B2B) magazines that have served the technical and business needs of the building and construction sectors nationally That range of titles cover the plumbing, electrical, home connectivity and residential building areas and offers both print and online services. Their primary audience is comprised of over 100,000 small/medium business owners of plumbing and electrical contracting firms and residential builders. Using its experience in the trade market areas, the company has over the past 3 years been developing an online information hub for consumers who intend to have a new home or renovation built for them. www.build.com.au is a website that is rich in independent information, to help guide consumers on the often difficult and complex path of building Jeff’s newest media venture started a couple of years ago when he launched a high quality men’s lifestyle publication called ManSpace, which takes a look at the interests and passions of men around Australia and the world. Such interests are often housed in garages, sheds or man caves and it has taken Jeff and his editorial team to some very interested sites around the nation. Connection Magazines has recently licensed its brand and ManSpace TV was born a few weeks ago on the Go! channel – the Channel 9 digital affiliate station. Jeff will take us across this latest project and share some of the experiences with putting both ManSpace magazine and TV together. Chair: Norman Hall |

Rescue at 2100 Hours
Jul 22, 2014
February 1942. The Japanese invasion of Timor has begun and attempts to evacuate a group of 29 Australian airmen, charged with keeping an airfield operational until the last moment, are thwarted. Under the leadership of Bryan Rofe, a 24-year-old meteorological officer, the airmen make for remote jungle along the northwest coast. All attempts to rescue the group fail. Malaria-ravaged and starving, these men are taken to the limits of their endurance for 58 days. When a 300-strong Japanese patrol is sent to hunt them down all hope seems lost, until they receive a strange signal from sea – an American submarine has been dispatched to their position. With the Japanese closing in, only courage will keep them alive. Using diaries of the airmen and wartime records, Rofe's grandson Tom Trumble brings to life one of the greatest stories of survival and escape of the Second World War. Chair: David Bradshaw |

Timor-Leste Rural Schools And Families
Aug 05, 2014
Mrs Leopoldina Guterres Leopoldina is the Director of St Joseph’s High School and 7 Primary Schools in the Baguia Sub-District. She is the mother of 6 children. She is a highly respected and a driving force in her community and often the organiser for formal community events and receptions. Her charming personality and multi-linguistic skills with Tetun, Portugese and English, make her first choice as MC in Baguia for many occasions, including President Xanana Gusmao’s visits. Despite the patriarchal society of her rural community in Baguia, Leopoldina is a leading role model of what women can achieve. Since 2005, Leopoldina has been the key liaison person whom Friends of Baguia have relied on to provide advice and manage their community projects. This is her third visit to Australia and today she will talk about the needs of schools and women in remote rural communities in Timor-Leste. She knows about the many difficulties of rural life first-hand. For example Baguia’s public transport to Baucau - due to the almost impassable roads - means standing in the back of a truck for 3 hours! Chair: Richard Logan |

The Origin Of Australian Rules Football
Sep 23, 2014
Historian Gillian Hibbins published the autobiography of Henry Colden Harrison in 1987 as "Running with the Ball", when the original was a 'rare' book available only in library stacks. When researching a preface, she was surprised to find that Harrison had long been termed the 'father' of Australian Rules Football' although it was apparent he was not, if by 'father' you mean 'founder'. Dismayed to find that Australia's national game was barely researched and that many misconceptions were common, she set out to do the research and some twenty years later was commissioned by the AFL to write the opening chapter of its book '150 years of Australian Football'. But was 1858 the actual beginning of the Rules game? And who were the founders? Gillian has already published "Sport and Racing in Colonial Melbourne" in which she deals with this and provides her nineteenth century references. Gillian is a past Secretary of the Rotary Club of Melbourne. Chair: David Rush

Rotary Life after Stroke Vocational Mentoring Program Pilot
Sep 30, 2014
One in six Australians will have a stroke in their lifetime. For those Stroke Survivors who spend time in rehabilitation, there is usually a big adjustment to be made to their lives, and sadly once they are discharged from Rehab, there are no structures to help them to reintegrate back into normal society.
This must change and Rotary along with St Vincent's, St Georges Hospitals, with state government funding is establishing a Vocational mentoring program. Join us in this breakthrough pilot program, and get some tips for stroke prevention at the same time.
